No picture on my Onkyo TX-NR609

I am not getting any picture from my receiver. I am getting only sound.

I don't know if the HDMI INs or HDMI OUT (that goes to the TV) is the problem. I do feel like the HDMI ins are the problem since on the TV it says there is no signal.

While I have not yet contacted the place I got it (Onecall), I don't feel too confident about the outcome since it was purchased close to two months now and their return policy is 30 days according to their website.

Would the Onkyo take this back?

Did it ever work correctly? That information is key. You really have to provide a ton more detail. We are not mind readers!

It could be the TV, cables, Onkyo, settings, content, Sun spots or solar flares and last but not the least, global warming. There.

Sorry guys. let me try give as much info as possible.

Item purchased early december 2011.

It has been working since purchased.

The HDMI cables are brand new.

I switched the HDMI wires around to rule those out

I connected the HDMI wires directly to the tv from cable box and it is working great.

I also have a Blue-Ray Disc player that is connected to the unit and it comes on for 2 seconds and then goes blank....no picture.

I am not sure what other info to provide since this is my first receiver and im stunned it stopped after such short period. not even two months. and I only use it in the evenings after work.

Ive played music on it once loud via ipod.

Just to make sure, check that HDMI is enabled on the inputs you are using and that you select to output via HDMI.

If that fails do a system reset.

We have had a number of post recently about HDMI failures on Onkyo receivers, so I suspect the HDMI board has failed.

It is now Onkyo's responsibility to service this unit under warranty, if the above measures do not solve your problem.

Makes me believe that some setting has been inadvertently changed and is now causing a HDMI handshake issue. Is there "Source - Auto" button on the remote?

Have you tried a factory reset?

Someone with the same receiver will chime in sooner or later.

This blows. Every other time I read about a newer piece of equipment dying it has Onkyo badged on it. My Onkyo I am using now lasted over 10 years before the amp went out.

I will try to do a factory reset etc,. But the reason i'm so puzzled is because it happened once about 3 days ago. Then last night I was watching the television, I changed the channel and the screen just went blank with a note on the TV that says NO SIGNAL.

BTW, since I hooked up this receiver, I haven't messed around with any setting but flipping through the different AUDIO setting to get the sound I like. It was pretty much plug and play where the VIDEO is concerned.

I no way claim to know much when it comes to receivers, kind of a noob myself. However, I have built computers for almost 20 years now and just from logical deductions and the process of elimination with the info. you provided, I would say 90% it is the HDMI controller in the receiver, it blew.

It would have to be that or when you changed the channel you accidentally hit some other button that changes the source, but I would put my money on the HDMI board going to the great electronics dustbin in the sky.

It seems that this HDMI problem is serious.

If you Google Onkyo HDMI board problems the page really lights up. Also they get a failing grade for customer service.

Worse there are serious design flaws in the current Onkyo range.

They get too hot.

It seems service is only a temporary solution and extensive DIY is required for a more permanent solution.

The basic problem stems it seems, from a very poorly thought out board layout leading to poor internal air circulation.

It seems you have to replace a bunch of 100 mfd electrolytic caps with larger ones rated to 105 degrees.

Other component changes may e required and installation of fans is apparently mandatory.

This is too much to expect from the average consumer, and Onkyo receivers need to be downgraded to junk category. They should not be recommended on these forums. In fact they should have an avoid designation.

Honestly, I wish onecall would take this back so I can get a Denon or some other brand. I did do some reading on this but didnt know the problem was that bad. You are absolutely right about it getting hot. It gets very hot.

The system that I am currently replacing is a HTIB by Onkyo, 500 series 7.1 I bought about 2 years ago for $600. For something that low powered, it even got hot enough to fry an egg on IMO.
