Just got it, but i have yet to install it.
Build quality is Terrible ! For the price though I can just about stand it. If I'd paid anything close to MSRP, I'd be hopping mad!
The top case was bowed up out of place and the paint was applied by some 8 year old ! The unit is so light, I'm wondering if it is one of those single circuit board china specials. Yes - made in China!
Interesting that project86 states that it is "built like a tank" !
I think maybe buy.com is down to selling seconds !
I'll be looking at returning or exchanging it.

sounds like you got a dud mines has no build issues and very clean.

For those of you who bought the Newpoint units, how do they compare to more expensive units like Belkin and Panamax? Do they have the same quality as those ones?

It looks like there are still some available. I got a new tv for my bedroom and I need a surge protector for it and at $60, this seems like a great deal.

i like it. and we've had pretty big storms here since.

my only complaint is the blue led brightness. (there are ways around that though)

Sent the first Newpoint back, and buy.com replaced it without question. The second unit is flawless and it was complete. (I had not realized it, but as well as the aforementioned defects, the first sample was missing the goodies packet -cables etc.) Someone else got hold of this one before me obviously !

Unit seems to work, but who really knows until I get a hit that takes out something else in my house !!

My newpoint unit is still running very nicely. I live in Oklahoma and for anyone who knows anything about Oklahoma weather we get a lot of storms. There have been at least three or four power outages at my house since I got the Newpoint and it has done its job very well. The LED's are really bright, so I just put a small strip of duct tape over them. Since the unit is on my bottom shelf you can't even see the duct tape unless you are right up next to the unit.

One of the best buys I have made all year.

Ordered a 12 oulet Newpoint.

I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for this thread, and all of the replies. i just ordered the 12 outlet, and so did a good friend of mine.

Sounds like a beefy unit, with a joules rating over 6000, (my old belkin is rated at 2500 or so) and it appears to have more connections than I need at the moment, so that's always nice.

As for the blue lights, I might be more apt to use transparent, or translucent blue plastic, or something to tame the blue lights when I recieve mine. When I modded pc's, I loved blue led's, so i like the blue lights, but if they are half as bright as you all describe, I'm going to need to dim them. The blue lights aren't a huge issue for me, though. worst case scenario, if I can't tame them as I'd like, I'll use tape and get on with my day.

Many thanks again, to the thread starter, as well as all that have replied.

You're welcome! This item is one of the very few deals that I've ever felt compelled to post on a "hot deal" type forum. My 10 outlet unit is still running strong and I just keep adding more stuff (just picked up a Wii).

PS I ended up applying a second coat of "tint" over the LED lights, using a black sharpy marker. It looks great.

Better choice?

Which of these would be a better choice? The APC C5Blk or the Newpoint 12 outlet device? I found both at buy dot com. They are the same price and i'm not sure I want another piece of equipment I can see, simply for the wifes sake! If there is a big difference in what it protects against then maybe I can justify it. Thanks!

My Newpoint Experience

I ordered the 12-outlet model a coule months ago and it seems to be working just fine. The built quality seems to be very good. For the $60 or so i paid, there isn't anything of this quality to compete with it. I know everyone has talked about the bright LED's and this is definitely an issue. You definitely have to do something to tone it down, especially for a HT environment. Currently, I'm using a small piece of electrical tape to cover it. The door to my stand blocks that part anyway. I may do other things in the future. This is my only complaint about the unit. It's definitely a problem, but there are a number of work-arounds for this, so this should not be a deal-braker. For the price, it's definitely worth it. :)

Are these still available for a reasonable price? I am looking for a good surge protector and saw that that price on the one linked in the beggining was back up to $90. Thanks

Another option

This thread got me interested in picking up a new surge protector, but instead of the newpoint I ended up going with this 10-outlet Belkin PureAV model at Buy.com, currently $55 with free shipping: http://www.buy.com/prod/pureav-ap11000fc-10-10-outlet-pureav-home-theater-power-conditioner/q/loc/111/202352763.html Mostly I wanted a floor model instead of a on-rack design, but there's a couple things I like about it more than the newpoint, namely a high-current outlet for amps (I've always wondered if my old $30 SP was limiting my subwoofer) and four always-on outlets instead of two. It's got a lower joule rating though, if that's important to you.

Frankly, I feel that power conditioners won't make a lick of difference on picture/sound quality unless you're seeing/hearing some pretty noticeable noise, and so far (with the PureAV at least) I seem to be right. But the unit looks and feels very solidly built and it's serving well in its primary purpose, i.e., helping me sleep a little easier. And hey, it came with a mail-in coupon for a $4 DTS demo disc, so well, bonus.

Dimension

Thisonekidmongo, Do you have the dimensions on the Belkin you ordered. I'm thinkin about that one but want to make sure it will fit my built-in. Thanks!!
