Welcome to the forum!

Are you connecting the HD-DVD player directly to the reciever for audio? If not, I'd suggest doing that. You can run the HDMI from the player to the TV for the video, and run the optical digital audio cable from the player to the receiver (I'm saying digital optical because that's what you mentioned). I do not suggest routing the audio through the TV because the TV will downmix HDMI audio to two-channel stereo (almost surely - I've only seen one TV that doesn't).

[STRIKE]The HTR-6130 doesn't have assignable inputs, so you'll need to select the source on the receiver corresponding to the optical input that you use (either "CD" or "DTV/CBL").[/STRIKE]

Please let us know if that works for you. We'll keep trying until it does.

EDIT: My apologies. The 6130 does have assignable digital audio inputs.

Here's how I think you should connect things, now that I've looked a bit more. I also need to correct myself - the 6130 does have assignable digital audio inputs. My apologies.
  • Connect the HD-DVD player HDMI output to the "DTV/CBL" HDMI input on the receiver
  • Connect the optical digital audio output from the HD-DVD player to the "DTV/CBL" optical digital audio input on the receiver
  • Connect the HDMI output on the receiver to the HDMI input on your TV
To hear the audio in that case, you'll need to select the "DTV/CBL" source on the receiver.

If you want, you can use the "DVD" HDMI input, but you'll need to assign the optical digital audio input to the "DVD" source.

You shouldn't need to connect the component video cables. The HDMI connection should be all that you need.

Which HD-DVD player do you have? You might need to set up the audio output on that player. I can see if I can find the owner's manual if you'll let me know the model.

You can hook it up to the "DVD" HDMI input if you want to. That's no problem. You'll just need to assign the optical digital input to the "DVD" selection.

I looked at the owner's manual for the HD-A30. I didn't see any mention that you'd need to activate the optical digital audio output. However, once you get it working, I'd suggest that you make sure that the optical digital audio output is set to "Bitstream" per page 21 of the owner's manual. That will allow your receiver to do the decoding and provide multichannel surround. If that output is set to "PCM", then the HD-A30 converts the audio to two-channel audio.

The default assignments for the digital audio inputs are the ones labeled on the back of the receiver. To assign those inputs to a different source, follow the directions on page 48 of the owner's manual for the receiver.

The owner's manual for the HD-A30 can be downloaded from the Toshiba website. I'd give you the direct link, but they are using Flash and I can't get the link directly.

Does your TV have a digital audio output (either optical or coax)? If so, connect that to one of the digital audio inputs on the receiver. That should do it for you. If you need any help with the details, just let us know.
