Hi All,

I purchased a Yamaha Rx-v765 quite recently and am not sure about the speakers that I would have to purchase for this. Reading a few of the similar speaker requests in this forum, I am overwhelmed to know the vast array of choices one has in terms of selecting speakers for his/her suitability.

My Living room is 17x20 sq ft. and Have a 60 inch dlp sitting in one of the corners of the room. With the way it is, I'll have to give a lot of thought on how to place my surround speakers. So, instead, to make it easy for now, I would like to purchase the front and center speakers first and slowly build on it.

That said, the only speakers I keep hearing from a friend are the Polk speakers. Can you please give me some idea as to what would be a choice for an economical /nice sounding set of speakers? I would also like some inputs on a sub woofer too.

Best Regards.

How much you looking to spend?

Upto $500. I'm not if that is too little but if I can get the fronts and center for that price I would be happy.

But again as they say, you get what you pay for. I dont want to compromise on price for something that I will hold on to for a long term and repent later that I should have had spent a little more intially.
What would be the best bang for my buck in your opinion?

Thanks

Do you have more information on the room? Like the ceiling height and type? Is the room carpeted or hardwoord/cermaic? Lots of hard surfaces like windows and brick or softer with lots of paintings and soft, frilly stuff?

I'm asking because the room makes a big difference. Heck, just go to different retailers with audio rooms and hear the differences. My room is a box, about 18ft x 18 ft with 17ft ceiling. All hard surface too except for the carpet. So it's definitely an echo chamber. I will probably end up adding wall treatments to knock the sound once my speaker arrive. It's also why I'm staying away from horn tweaters.

One thing to consider is what your listening will be. Is 100% home theatre or a mix of music and cinema? Do you have an existing subwoofer? Can you describe your ears? Meaning, do you know what type of performance you want from your speakers?

Yeah, there are a ton of options out there. I know because I spent a bunch of time researching to figure out what I should buy. I know there are people that like Polk and I've only listened to the mid-range/lower end Poolk you can find at Best Buy. Compared to Klipsch RF series, I prefered the Klipsch to Polk. But then the Klipsch fell out of favor compared to other (more expensive) brands due to the fatigue I felt from the horn tweaters. It's a personal preference thing. But if I was 75-100% home theatre, then I'd probably be very happy with the Klipsch.

My advice? Do some thinking/pondering. What type of person are you? I'm very visual/audio centric. Meaning I like to listen to music and I can hear the subtle nuances and the audio creates that sound stage in my mind where I can hear the backup singers are on the left side of the stage, etc...

Then if you have time and are in an area where you can to stores or friends houses, go listen to various brands in your price range. Keep in mind, the salemen will try to upsell you. But the best advice I can give is listen, listen, listen. Take your music if you want an accurate comparison. And think about the room differences, it may clue you in to what they might sound like in your room. That helped me a ton.

What did I buy? Axiom M60 fronts with a VP150 center. I haven't listened to them, so I'm taking a leap of faith. But what I learned from listening to many different brands clued me in to what I like. So from the reviews, I suspect these will be a set that I will enjoy. Plus the 30 day trial period swayed me. I just go the shipping notification so I'll post my impression when they arrive.

This does get discussed a lot in here and there are some fair standard solutions especially since you are using common since instead of trying to cram a 7.1 system into $500. But that budget is still tight for a room that size.

You could go with floor standing towers like this member is trying to do. There I suggested listing to a pair of Infinity Primus P362 towers and a PC350 center for just about $600. I'd still add a good sub at some point but these (if you like how they sound) should get you by fine for now.

The other option is pair of Behringer B2030P ($131/pr shipped) bookshelf studio monitors, and a Hsu STF-2 subwoofer ($320 + S&H). You can add more pairs of the Behringers later to create a 3.1 or 5.1 system (plus a spare). They sound good out of the box but there is a cheap and simple mod a member came up with that really improves them. Assuming that you have 9 foot ceilings and the room doesn't open into other areas a single STF-2 should just about be able to handle that 2700cuft space. If the overall space is any bigger then you'll either want a larger sub or eventually add a second STF-2.

Thank you for the recommendations.
Sorry I did not mention more details on my room. I have a open floor plan in the house and my Family room open up into the kitchen which then open up to the formal living/dining area and the front door.

Having said that, What should I look for when I research for speakers that go well with this receiver. Do I need to focus on the watts? How can one tell if my receiver will be able to drive a particular speaker? I'll also look around in these forums if there are any white papers that might talk all about it or if there is a HT 101 guide.

Regards.

And by the way, the room is not pre-wired, so from your recommendations, I feel like I would be better off with Floor standing/tower speakers and hence I have narrowed down my search to floor standing speakers.

Thanks

Found Polk TSi300 for a good price, will they be any good

Hi All,

Once again, thanks for all the recommendations. I was considering getting the Infinity floor stndg speakers as suggested to me in this thread but I just came across this deal on Polk TSi 300's. How do they compare for my setup?

I would appreciate a quick response so I can score on this deal. They are on sale for $129 each.

Regards.
