Newbie looking for DefTech's

Hello all. I've been bitten by the home theater bug. After researching speakers and receivers for the last several weeks, on a whim, I went to the big 3 (Ultimate Electronics, Best Buy, Circuit City) to audition different systems.
I now see how important it is to listen for yourself. It was amazing to have terms like full sound, highs that are too high and neutral speakers, click and make perfect sense.
Ultimate Electronics has the best stuff of the three, but the experience was a complete nightmare. From the salesman's lack of knowledge to the piss-poor setup of the listening room to the fact they can't get any speakers they don't have in the store. Including speakers from the same lines that they do carry.
Which brings me to my problem. I really, really liked the DefTechs. By far. Ultimate Electronics is the only place in Las Vegas that carries DefTechs. Does anyone know of any good places that sell them over the internet?
I checked the yellow pages for home theater/audio shops and certainly plan on checking other brands now, but if I do finally choose the DefTechs, I want to know I can get them. Any help would be appreciated.

My sister in law and her husband live in Las Vegas and experienced the same thing you did. They visited us in Northern California and were incredibly impressed by the knowledge, selection and far better prices available to them. They are purchasing Definitive 10's and 4's or 6's for the surrounds. Since they live in Nevada, they are discounting the products more then usual to help offset the sales tax (7.25%) since they will pay it if they pick the products up but not if they are shipped. Shipping more then offset the sales tax saving. I must admit, the salesman they had was very, very good and even I was quite impressed by a commissioned salesmans knowledge and ability to be zero pressure. His formula worked, they will be sure to ask for him to complete the deal.

Call Definitive Technology directly or email Chet in tech support. They are very helpful and I am sure they will be able to work out some way to get the speakers you want without all the hassles.

Jason-

From somebody that really fell in love with Definitive Technology speakers and was ready to drop $4000 on a setup, I'd really recommend looking at what other manufacturers have to offer. You didn't indicate which model you were looking at, nor did you say what your budget was, which is all a non-issue if you've got your heart set on the Def Techs.

My experience was this...the more I listened to the Definitives, the more I liked them. From model to model, room to room, CD to CD,...it just kept getting better. It wasn't until I listened to another manufacturer that I realized what the Definitives were missing...clarity, conciseness, detail, articulation, accuracy...What the Definitives DID have was the BIG SOUND, the massive soundstage and presence, the thunderous bass, the big fat enveloping sound that we're all looking for. The problem is that they sacrificed their precision for their presence. As a 2-channel stereo music fan, that really revealed itself while listening to other speakers.

My only advice is to listen to what other manufacturers have to offer before committing to the Definitives. They're certainly a well-made speaker and sound great in certain settings, but I'd advise seeing what else is out there before settling on the Definitives.

I have not decided on DefTech's yet. Like many people, I can't make up my mind. I'm still looking at NHT, PSB, Axiom, and Ascend Acoustics.
I was looking at LCR2002's across the front, BP2X's in back and the 200TL sub. I don't want to spend anymore than that.
It will probably be about 70% dvd's, 30% music. I've ruled out Klipsch, Infinity, Kef and Polk.
I'm having a tough time finding a dealer with a large selection of high end receivers and speakers.

As Jason stated, I would certainly try to audition as many speakers as you can. That's what I did. I listened to Paradigm, B&W, Polk, Infinity, Klipsch, Monitor Audio, Vienna, and more.

The last thing I listened to were the Def Techs. I listened to them on the receiver I intended to buy (Denon 3805) in two different dealer showrooms. I didn't look back after that.

I purchased the Def Techs for my system.
