Did someone mention the Cowboys.......

Umm, guys, Texas just lost to A&M last week, right?:)

I'm a Sooner, but I was actually cheering for Texas because that could have put 4 Big 12 teams in the Top 10. But No....................

Here is the link to the manual for the RX-V659. Look at pg. 50 on using virtual DSP. It explains that if you have your surround L/R set to "none" it creates virtual speakers to reproduce the natural sound field, in case you don't want to set up actual surround speakers.

IMO, you will still be missing out on the sound effects that only true surrounds can create. I believe that even the Bose cubes that I am still currently using are better than not having surrounds at all.

Enjoy your setup. Gig 'em Aggies!:)

This link requires an ID and password. You will have to check your user manual that comes with your receiver or sign in on Yamaha's website to check it out. The rest of the info is directly from that manual.

To the opening poster...

Have you considered in-wall or in-ceiling surrounds? It really doesn't get anymore discrete than that.

I have an angled ceiling that starts at about 10' and goes up to about 30' - not sure where I'd locate ceiling mounts. However, the issue with either ceiling or wall is the architecture doesn't allow for running the wiring (w/o significant construction efforts.).

Thanks to all for the considerations - I'm going to go with Greg's simple idea of adding the rear surround as a temporary setup (setup for movies/gaming), then store when not in use. I'll stick with Aperion and add the small, satellite pair.

I found the manual here:

That worked for me for over a year; just dont get lazy and leave the surrounds out in the open after you watch the movie; it will drive your wife crazy.
