Let's see......

This week we have:

Face Off SE....old movie
The Graduate SE....old movie
Away From Her....no thanks
...and a bunch of TV show crap

Dangit.....how about something worth watching? That would be nice, wouldn't it? I reserve Friday nights for movies I have never seen, and it seems like a long time that I have scraping the bottom of the barrel looking for titles.

...........and you guys wonder why stuff like "Delta Farce" and "Are We Done Yet" finds its way into my netflix queue:rolleyes: Well.....it's because I have already seen the good ones.

Because I have seen so many, choosing fresh unseen titles just keeps on getting tougher & tougher. Suggestions never help because it's almost a certainty that if it is a good movie......

A....I have already seen it
or
B... I probably own the DVD too.

Geez....this is going to be another tough movie week. I depend mostly on new releases, and if I'm forced dig up an older title.......I'll be scraping awfully low to find something.

Not that long ago, I remember buying as many as 10 new release DVDs a month. Now I am lucky to find 1 or 2 that I want.:(

Who buys DVDs anymore? :D j/k But seriously though, they aren't going to spend a lot of time on big DVD releases when the studios will all be trying to push the HD formats.

Yeah, but think of all the money that you've saved. :D

Of course, I take that as a challenge. A challenge that I will lose, no doubt, but I must at least try. Here are some that you may have not seen (but as you said, what are the odds?) that you might find at least partially interesting:

1) Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior
2) Timeline
3) The 10th Kingdom (could fall under the family show category)
4) Where Eagles Dare
5) Equilibrium
6) District B13

What good are the HD formats when there are very few new releases worth having (regardless of format)? Replacing an existing collection of older DVDs with HD is not likely to be a popular move.

Are any of those "new releases"? Equilibrium and Ong-Bak are years old, even though Ong-Bak was only released here like a year ago.

Well that's you. I bought at least 10 titles in the last 2 months and though September doesn't have much for me, October and November will. What good is buying a DVD that doesn't look as good?

Nope, not new at all. However, BN seemed to be looking for something to rent for this Friday, so I threw out some titles that he might not have seen. I wouldn't expect for Ong-Bak to be that widely viewed here.

I agree, there really hasn't been much of anything worth getting lately. Hopefully some good new stuff will come out soon... I'm waiting for Spiderman 3 and Transformers to hit DVD.

If he hasn't seen Equilibrium, I will throw in a second vote for that. It is relatively low budget, but it is very entertaining. I had to seek that one out some time ago to buy it, but it seems pretty easy to find these days. Definitely worth a rental. Ong-Bak is good too, but in that "Jackie Chan, old school fight/action flick" sort of way, again no big budget here, but fun to watch. I was curious about District B13..looked interesting, I might have to give it a rent.

I find standard DVD picture quality excellent, and more than good enough for the vast majority of movies. Only a small handful of exceptionally visually-oriented titles (eg Fifth Element, Planet earth) seem like they would really gain much.
Someday, when the idiotic format war has been settled and player prices drop to the same level as standard DVD player prices, Blu Ray or HD DVD might be worth owning.:)

Two more:

1) The Castle of Cagliostro (the Japanese movie used for the 1980's era Cliff Hanger arcade game)

2) Lilya 4-Ever (NOT a family movie - good movie, but extremely disturbing)

Okay, I'm done now.

BTW, I agree with the original idea of the thread. I actually put my Netflix account on hold over the summer because I ran out of things that I wanted to rent.

I sort of thought that at first too, but there is no comparison between DVD, even upscaled, and what you get with the HD formats. I am continually surprised at how great some of these movies look and more and more of them are starting to impress. Some movies I don't expect to even notice it and I find myself admiring the picture quality as much as anything else. Kung Fu Hustle for example, I picked it up because it was on sale and I enjoyed it, but had only seen it on DVD. When I watched it on BD I was literally shocked at how good the video was.

I once averaged a couple DVD purchases/week when I was building my collection. That phase began to dwindle when it became evident that I pretty much owned everything I wanted to buy. I've since been a member of netflix for the past few years, and my purchases have slowed drastically. IE...... Releases that are on my future no brainer must-buy list are limited to only include the biggies that I simply must have..... Spidey 3, the new Potter, Die Hardest, Pirates, Bourne Again, etc.etc.etc..... The rest get dumped into the netflix queue.

..........and no. I have absolutely no intent to replace my current DVDs for future HD versions. No intent whatsoever....... Nor am I avoiding/delaying current purchases so I can buy it later in HD. I'm not one of those guys who are putting their DVD collection on hold as they wait for the DVD war to be resolved. I'm perfectly happy watching movies in 480p, and my current & future 480p dvds will remain happy members of my DVD collection once I do finally make the upgrade.

Transformers=October 16
Spiderman =October 30

Yeah, I figured. You did, after all, say that suggestions wouldn't help. :) But, I've been in your situation before, so I thought that I'd throw out a few titles.

I pefer to let at least a year elapse between two viewings of any given DVD. That is why I have several hundred (possibly over 1,000 by now.):)

I only have a few duplicates in my collection. Most of the BD titles I've been buying are ones that I never bought and now have a little more incentive to pick up. I have gotten rid of a few of my SD titles that I can live without now that I have the BD versions, but any collector/special editions I am hanging onto.
