New Onkyo 805 a bad apple

I was not able to wait for the newer receivers and bought a refurbed 805. Here is what I have found.

1. The componet switching does not seem to pass the blue cable. I have tryed different cables and reseated. I have the Hitachi 65f59a and the componet seems to provide best hd pq. This is probably the deal ender for this receiver.
2. Lipsync? I am seeing lipsysnc on my htpc and hddvd. My vip602 had some lipsync issues at times so need to look at that some more. This has to go also I am sensitive to it.
3. Like the remote and the receiver is nice and heavy.
4. Sound seems to be very good. I will run the auto callabration tonight to see what it can really do but so far very clear and dynamic. This is what I like.
5. Heat runs warm but nice to have in the winter in a basement room!

With unit clearly broken I would like to ask what other receiver choices would have the simular sound quality. Not sure I want the lipsync even if the video issue can be fixed. Called Emotiva befor pulling the triget on this one and all they had was the mmc-2 and were not going any lower than 699 also called outlaw and thay had b-stock 970's for 499.
I have a lpa-1 amp so the pre does not have to have amp at all. I know the lmc-2 would be perfict for my situation but have doubts about the April launch date. I have liked the SQ of the 805 so far and would like to stay in that catagory of performance. Took chance on refurb and got bad apple prefer new from now on if possable.

I am curious why you wouldn't just get a new Onkyo 805. It doesn't sound like this unit is up to specs. Some of this refurbished stuff is a good deal, some not. The stuff that isn't any good, is a real lemon that sometimes not even factory can't figure out.

I did not belive the lipsync problem would occur on such a nice peice of hardware so I orderd anyway. But I do not like lips not moving in sysnc with the sound. Any other 805 owners botherd by this? I will leave them a nice big note about the video switching issue so mabey it will get fixed for the next buyer.

I have the 875 and have no problems. There is a adjustment on the 875 and 805. To get a good adjustment try having the sound coming though the TV and the amp at the same time then adjust the delay until you have no echo.

There is a lot of issues with this on all the receivers, just do a google search.
I do understand your frustration though, I had a new Yamaha receiver that would crackle and pop after about 45 minutes of play. Ended up taking it back and buying a Denon. The Yamaha was the better deal at the time, but I just couldn't get over the problem.

This is a common problem on all the new Onkyo's. It is a delay that is introduced through the DSP chips. It has been confirmed by Onkyo and their is no fix for the lip sync issues. The problem has also been measured by folks over at AVS forum and there are multiple threads regarding this issue.

The only thing you can do is to try another brand or wait to see if Onkyo fixes the problem with next years units.

Since the digital processor is such an important part of the receiver, why not let this one go and find a brand with a better digital stage. Yamaha and Pioneer Elite come to mind. Both brands are known to have solid processors.

Not good so a new unit should have the proble also. Guess I got in a hurry but the out of sync is bothersome enought to jump onkyo ship until fixed. I wont as for rma untill I do some more testing but will be quick after that. Anyone have defect return experence with accessories4less.com?

Consider yourself lucky. There is a thread called something like "Have your Onkyo receivers caught fires?" at avs. It's hilarious. And here I am still debating whether to get the new Yamaha (hate the look) or a silver 805 (looks nice).

The unit is very nice looking. I even liked the remote. I am going to test the sound some more tonight but the audio delay and broken video switch will cause me to send back.

By the way, the older 805's on the market have a firmware update for them.
That AVS fire forum is hilarious, those guys need to dust their houses a little more. And how about a little bit of clearance on these machines.

I have the Pioneer 92 which is really excellent. The video processor is amazing - at least from my limited experience. If that's above your budget you might wait around for the 1018 which is due out soon. The hot Yamaha seems to be the 663. That should be in same ballpark as the 805 or even less. Maybe even the Yamaha 1800. I had one day with the 1800 and liked it a lot. Great processor. I picked the Pioneer only because its amps are stronger.

I recently got a refurb 805. No issues other than heat. Excellent SQ and it really
opened up my polk rti8's. For the price I paid this is one of best investments I made other than my used SVS PB12-ISD.

more testing

1. Ran the automated setup and it sounds good. Notice small sounds pebles falling passing collum and other effects.
2. Found the lipsync set to 40 set to 0 and it is bearible for dvd but the dish network is still off more.
3. No dice on the componet switching as it still not passing the blue cable to monitor. Refurbs

Perhaps the Pioneer VSX-1018 when it becomes available in June, if the VSX-815 can tie you over. If you are using power amplifiers of any kind you could also look at the Yamaha RX-V663 which will be available soon as well (sooner than the Pioneer VSX-1018).

A unit catching fire and maybe killing people is something you find "hilarious"?

On the delay issue I have this problem sometimes on Cable but it usually is due to the DVR not in step on audio and video, a simple quick rewind and forward clears it up but adjustment for all or any channel is possible with my Rotel Pro.
Mass market stuff is gonna allow a bad unit here and there, the industry reports up to 15% of all units in AV gear as a whole have some issue so its not unheard of to need a repair or replacement, many times Bstock can be a good buy because if it has been serviced and tested you should be good to go and save some cash in the bargain.

With the death of hddvd it will probably be some time before I need to be concerned about the lossless hd formats. Is there a steal out there now that gets 5 *'s for multichannel performance and has great SQ and some of hdmi functions? Video processing is secondary bu if it can sync the vis and audio?
