I just bought a Yamaha home theater system and a separate Oppo blu-ray player. Connecting the two components along with my cable box is easy since all i need to connect them all is HDMI cables. The trick is i want to add a VCR to my system also. How would i connect a VCR to a system that includes a AV receiver, blu-ray player and cable box? What cables do i need?

Most likely you will need to use component video inputs and a component video cable.

What model receiver is it? Most VCR's (unless it is a SVHS) will connect with either composite or S-Video. You need to look at your manual and see if it will upconvert composite (480i) to HDMI. If it does not you will need to connect the video directly to the TV if the TV will do 480i. It would be most helpful if you listed the model numbers for both your TV and the receiver. Oh and Welcome to the forum.

My system is the Yamaha YHT-797 5.1-Channel Network Home Theater System. As for the TV it's a Panasonic VIERA TC-P60GT50 60-Inch.

Ok, according to your manual (pg 18)you will have to connect the composite video cable from the VCR to the TV or to the receiver and then connect a composite from the receiver to the TV as the receiver will not upconvert to HDMI. So when using the VCR you will have to switch to the VCR source on the receiver and turn the TV to the composite input.

For what I can find your TV should do 480i fine. It will look like crap but that is not the TV's fault.
