I picked up Morph the Cat yesterday. I got the 2 disc package, and can confirm that one disc is a regular CD, the other is recoginzed by my Pioneer universal player as DVD-Audio with both Surround and Stereo mixes.

Kruncher
Kruncher, what Pioneer player are you using? I read recently that the 563a doesn't recognize the DVD-A side. Sounds like it may need another firmware upgrade.

Just the other day I was listening to Steely Dan Aja and wondering if there are any other groups out there that might be similar in talent and taste. Anyone have suggestions?
There's nothing like Steely Dan.

I have the Pioneer DV-578A-S. Picked it up for about $150. Listening to DVD-A & SACD, even with my older Paradigm Titans and PDR-8 (all of which I'd love to upgrade, until I look in my wallet), is fantastic.

I've been very pleased with it; it has handled everything I've fed it, including +R DVDs (which aren't listed in the specs). Very good audio and video control features. It's never once given me any grief: no funny pops between tracks, no skipping - it just works.

I could not listen to more than a few tracks of the CD version of this new album. The bass and vocal tracks are highly compressed to a degree as to sound very artificial. It annoys me greatly. Maybe the DVD-A version does not have this trait. The previous albums were far superior in sound quality, IMO.

Dire Straits would be the only group that I would consider similar to the Dan. Similar in the way that they were both very talented artist that played music that was hard to catorgize.

I'll second that; I'm about the same age as Fagen/Becker and had my first somewhat serious audio system in '72 when they first hit with "Do It Again". After hearing them, no one else really came close to their production values and audio quality. I'll also say that Dire Straits and the Mark Knopfler solo releases are my other favorites. They make you glad you invested in good audio gear.

Agreed. Two CD's I used to demo speakers with and still enjoy listening too are:

Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
Steely Dan - Aja

Hearing Black Cow on a meaty amp with good speakers is so rewarding. And wanting to critically listen to Brothers in Arms in its entirety is a sign you have good gear.

Stanton, what didn't you like about The Night Belongs to Mona? I really liked the song personally and thought it had some interesting lyrics to go with some great music.

So, it's probably worth stating that there are 3 "types" of songs (in general) for me: those I love and can listen to repeatedly, those I like and listen to as part of an album/CD (I tend to listen to whole CD's at a time), and those I just can't stand and actually skip/delete if I make a custom CD (or put it on my iPod). "The Night Belongs To Mona" fits into the second category: I like it OK, but if I had to rank all the tunes on this CD, it would probably be last. BTW, it seems as though my pattern with this CD is becoming: I can listen to the first 4 tracks repeatedly (e.g. I love them) and then play out the rest of the CD (although I really like the groove on "Mary Shut the Garden Door".)

Good review, I have heard track samples on-line and I am looking forward to receiving my CD+DVD-A version that should arrive from your country any day now. This seems like a great album. I have Fagan's others on both cd and DVD-A (and some of the Dan's of course) and if this is anywhere as good I'll be a happy camper.

The organ solo on track 6 is screamin'! Love that cheesy Hammond B3 sound!:D

WmAx says CD sounds highly compressed and difficult to listen to. I disagree. I think it sounds excellent. I listened to it on my Arcam Alpha 7 CD player through my NAD 3240 integrated. Highly enjoyable.

Damn I didn't realize they were releasing this in DVD-A and I just bought the CD :( Regardless, this CD rocks and I think the sound quality is very good.

My favorite track right now is H Gang. This CD has a very similar feel to Nightfly IMO.

Yeah, the DVD-A version is a two-disc pack that comes with the CD and the DVD-A. I haven't listened to the DVD-A yet as I need to hook up the analog cables on my player.

I just ordered the DVD-A version. Kind of a pleasant surprise that there are still DVD-A's being released.

If you are going to reference something that I posted, please do so accurately. I stated that the vocal and bass line tracks are highly compressed. This is different as compared to if all of the tracks were highly compressed. But because of this, they do not sound natural, as in what one hears in real life. The tracks I mention are not even as compressed as the worst examples in current pop/rock, but they are over-compressed none the less. The acceptability of such phenomenon is dependant on what one likes subjectively or what experiences one has to reference, or a combination of both.
