Hey Everyone,
I just registered with this forum today and just wanted to say hello to everyone.
I found this site while searching for information about crossover componets. I'm in the process of recapping a pair of old speakers that will be my first recap job. I have several other pair that I want to do after this first pair are done. From the little I have been able to read on this forum it seems there is a tremendous amount of knowledge here.
I've been thinking quite a bit lately about putting together a nice surround system so this site has to be the place to be.

Thanks,
Al

Welcome to this place on the internet.

What are the speakers you are recapping?

The speakers I'm recapping first are a pair of Magnavox S73 aka S073. It took me a long time to find any real information on these speakers but I finally found a "1967 Magnavox Sales Brochure" that has them for sale. They sold for $175.00 each back then and they were the top of the line stand alone speaker model that Magnavox offered at the time. Two way design that have a 15" alnico magnet woofer and a horn tweeter that measures 10 1/2" x 4".
The only capacitor in the crossover is a 8uf 25v that is giving me a hard time finding. I can find a couple at PE but the cheap one is really cheap and the nice one is really nice. The cheap cap is just not what I'm looking for in quality and the nice cap is very nice and very expensive @ more than thirty dollars each. And then there is the fifty dollar one that I completely forgot about, with good reason. I wish I could find a good six or eight dollar capacitor with a 8.0uf value. I have decided that I will probably go with an 8.2uf because of availability but I don't know how much this will affect the sound, if at all.
I will post some pics a little later this afternoon.
I would really appreciate any help I can get with this little project.

Be back in a bit with some pics.
Al

edit: I think I will start a new thread in the "Loudspeaker" section but I don't know how to reference this thread to that part of the forum. I will do my best.
Thanks Again,
Al

8.2 µF will most likely be OK. It's only 2.5% more than 8 µF. In DIY speaker building, a useful rough rule of thumb says that anything within ±10% of a crossover part's value will work.

Dayton Audio DMPC-8.2 8.2uF 250V Polypropylene Capacitor 027-426

If you feel that you must have 8.0 µF try this

Carli Mylar 8 mfd: Madisound Speaker Store

Or get two 4.0 µF caps, twist their leads together so the caps are in parallel with each other, and use them as a single cap of 8 µF (4 + 4).

Dayton Audio DMPC-4.0 4.0uF 250V Polypropylene Capacitor 027-421

You could just keep using this thread until a mod moved the whole thing over to the DIY forum where I think it might belong. The important thing is that we get to see some pictures. Everything else is secondary. :)

Welcome to the disease. Alex is the 12 step handbook keeper. Adam is the town AH Junkie and me I'm the lazy DIYer who's projects take years to complete.

Pics

Well, I'm going to try to add some pictures of my Magnavox S73's. I'll be ordering some parts tomorrow and I might just order a 5-way binding post pad while I'm at it. These have just the speaker wire that goes thru a hole in the back so I would like to get one of those recessed pads with the 5-way binding posts on them. I also plan to refinish the cabinets. These speakers really sound nice and will sound much better when recapped. From what I have read on the internet most opinions of these are negative but I believe those opinions come from folks who have never heard them. It takes very little to power these speakers and I suppose that is because they were made in the age of tubes and the beginning of solid state.

Let me see if I can load some pics. Thanks Swerd for the info on the caps!
Al

I just found out that I can't load pictures. What a bummer. I guess I will have to wait until I'm allowed.
Sorry Folks,
Al
