Hello
I am building a music only...{no video} system and I am finding it hard to locate a great receiver under 600.00. This is my budget on this piece. I am replacing a 16 year old system that contains the following pieces.
Rec Onkyo
CD onkyo
Speakers DCM
EQ Audio source.

This system sounded very good when run through the EQ, but was very flat and muddy without it. I lived with it for a long time until each part started to fail.

I am looking at these two receivers. Please let me know your thoughts on each one. And let me know if there is a better option in the price range.

Yamaha RX-797

Denon DRA 697CI

Thanks for your time.

Outlaw makes a very nice stereo receiver with a 100watts per channel.

The speakers sound flat and muddy, not the receiver (just to let you know). You might want to put a pretty big portion if not all towards speakers. You may find you don't need to get a different receiver just yet.:)

Outlaw and NAD make some nice 2-channel receivers that might fall in your price range.

I am wondering if ematthews is replacing his whole system...

What is your budget for each item?

My issue was......When I turned my system up it kept cutting off on me. Like it was tripping a circuit or something. I removed the speakers and hooked up my Polk speakers from my home theater and everything is OK. The audio sorce EQ is on it's last leg as well. My cd player took a dump a while back ago and since then I have been using a DVD player hooked up to the system

I really just want to build a very nice audio system for music again. The home theater system sucks for music........The onkyo receiver is still ok, but its a dedicated pro logic A/V receiver and is getting old at 16 years. And is also very flat without the EQ help....I would like to build something without an EQ for help if I can.

It sounds like something is wrong with the DCM's as well as the old Onkyo. Which DCM speakers are they, and which Polks do you have? If either speakers sound bad without EQ, a new receiver is unlikely to help matters (unless the Onkyo is faulty or failing, which might well be the case. All properly-functioning hi-fi amps are transparent, but this goes out the window when they're broken.)

If a new receiver "wakes up" the speakers, then it's a pretty safe bet the old one had run down the curtain and was about to join the choir invisible. :)

FYI.....I will be purchasing new speakers as well. I want a complete new system...
The Polks are RTI-7'S
Not sure on the DCM's......They are a triangle shaped very thin speaker. 16years old.

I'll recommend a 2 channel receiver I actually own and use. It is a Teac with 100 wpc and easily the best tuner stage I've ever heard in a receiver tuner. It has a 12dbf sensitivity measurement which is what you find in a high end tuners like the Magnum Dynalab. Fit and finish are beautiful and performance is flawless. http://www.teac.com/consumer_electronics/RV-S2100.html for the details. You can buy one for around $200 and that will leave more money for the speakers, which is the part of the system that really matters.

Another vote for the Teac. Teac is so unrecognized.:(

Wow...can something that cheap compete with the others like the Wolf? I come from a world were you get what you pay for. If this isn't the case, that would leave some big change for my speakers.

I'm afraid so. Welcome to the world of audio where most things sound about the same and work about the same but don't cost the same. As long as 100 wpc is good enough for you (should be) and as long as you choose 8 or 6 ohm speakers, it will perform with the best of them except in the tuner stage where it will outperform almost all of them. The tuner stage really is that good. It is amazing and I've heard hundreds of them and own 4 myself.

Forgive my ignorance. By TUNER, you are talking about am/fm pick up?
I don't listen to the radio much so not a huge deal. I want a good sounding amp that is not flat. If at all possible, this system is being built to NOT use a EQ unless I have to have one for my sound shaping taste.

"I want a good sounding amp that is not flat."

That's kind of an oxymoron since good amps/receivers are designed for as flat a response as possible.

I'd look for units that have a true "tape monitor" loop (not all have them nowadays), or separate pramp/power amp stages in which you can isnsert an equalizer to tailor the sound to your tastes.

Yes, I'm talking about the FM tuner stage. This is a 20 lb. unit with an aluminum face plate and the 100 wpc is RMS - i.e. real watts. This unit will sound like any other 100 wpc amplifier that is being used within its design parameters. Like other competently made units it has a flat frequency response, inaudible distortion and a low noise floor. The speaker terminals are the large binding posts. It is built like a tank.

The only thing it lacks is popularity and prestige. Teac made its fame in the 1960's and 1970's as a tape recorder manufacturer. They've always been known for them. When they decided to get into the high end electronics business in the 1980's they developed a new brand called Esoteric that still makes some of the nicest equipment available. They did this to shake off being known as a tape recorder company in a digital age.

You can put this unit up against any of the popular brands of stereo receivers and it will look just as good, have better construction than many of them, perform exactly the same with conservatively rated power and, as I said, the best FM reception you can find for less $750. I'm not kidding you. I use this to power my bedroom TV audio so I use it every night since my wife and I usually like to watch some TV before dozing off. It even has a sleep timer so it will turn itself off, if you like. I listen to FM a lot in bed and really appreciate how well it does radio reception.

I'll go ahead and write up a review of it for the review forum. Sorry, Seth, I'm not going to open it up for photography. I did that for the Denon tuner and nobody cared.

The Teac 2100 has a tape monitor loop as well. Preamp outputs too. It's a very capable unit.

I trust you.....I am not looking to build the best sounding system out there...hints my budget. Just something I can play loud a clear. Is this unit able to receive an EQ and a sub if needed? And any recomendation on a place to purchase?

Do you care to buy only new? You can get some very good deals on used gear at audiogon. Recently I replaced my old Sony AVR which was powering my 2ch system with a used Arcam integrated.

The EQ is not a problem. This is not an A/V receiver so it doesn't have bass management and a sub output. You would have to connect the sub to the speaker terminals and the speakers to the sub. Any modern powered sub can handle that.
