Never heard of this sub (Triad??)

Hey guys I just bought a used Receiver and subwoofer on Craigslist. I really just wanted the receiver but I wasn't about to stop the guy from throwing in a 12 inch sub. The price was super low so if the sub turns out to be garbage that's completely fine with me. I can't seem to find a model number in the sub anywhere. The brand name appears to be Triad and it is indeed a 12" speaker. It feels surprisingly heavy and it was made in America. Anyone heard of these? Are they any good at all? Thanks.

Triad is very well known for their high quality in-wall speakers. There is a Triad rep that comes on the forum sometimes. Post some pics and I'm sure he will help next time he is on the forum or someone else may recognize what model it is.

I had some triads in my home theater system and was not impressed, particularly given the high price. In fairness to Triad, part--and maybe most--of the problem was that the center channel speaker had been embedded in crown molding on the ceiling; I'm sure most of the center channel sound was directed several feet above my head. (The system was already in place when we bought the house, and I don't know how it was actually installed behind the molding; it doesn't look like they had even tried to angle the center channel down towards the listening area).

My impression is that Triad's main value is dealing with WAF issues.

Thanks for the responses. Here are some pics of it. It is not in perfect shape but doesn't look really bad either. I would say 7/10. I have not hooked it up yet but I plan to soon. I would really like to find out what the model might be and of course if it might be worth anything. As you can see in one of the pictures My Labrador Molly is cowering in front of it so it must be somewhat of a beast.

He doesn't like being called a rep. I learned the hard way. I think he prefers TRIAD DUDE. He's pretty active at AVS.

If the center was installed behind the crown, it was a bad installation. That's not how they're supposed to be and it will make the sound much worse. A bad installation or system design can make the best equipment sound bad and those should have sounded much better.

Mr Paul Scarpelli got back to me and told me what I have is an In room Silver Sub that retailed for $1250. I got it and the used Onkyo Tx-sr605 for 40 bucks! Looks like I will be selling a Polk Sub soon

Update: Still using this “free” triad sub over 12 years later. It remains my best Craigslist score to date. I’ve moved it to my bedroom and added a second sealed Triad Gold I found on CL for $150 and they are way more than enough for the small room.

My TX-SR805 is still kicking. Until I replace the TV with these newfangled 4k ones, I'll keep using it. Maybe even after it.

Nothing to blush about there. The 805 is/was a beast. It just never runs out of power, and sounds great. I had an 808 that Onkyo fixed on their dime. It was very close to the 805 but just a little shy of power. I always wanted an 805(at the time) but got really close with my 808 and feel like those were good times for AVR’s and good clean output. For a long time, Onkyo was the darling of the A/V world offering the best combination of bells, whistles, and power.

I'm not blushing, but proud despite its reputation for short lifespan over overheating. My does pretty well, and I have to say. It wasn't 100% bulletproof as I had to replace a couple of resistors for the LCD front display - $5 and a bit of DIY soldering, but otherwise, it's rock solid. I never felt like I am missing power.

Onkyo had several periods where they took product value and features/price very seriously and shook up markets to deliver exceptional products. Not always flawless, but extraordinary values.
They realized their proprietary AccuEQ doesn't cut it or attract enough savvy buyers.
I am glad they now use Dirac Live in their higher model, like NR7100. The only thing left is to bring Dirac to $800 and lower models. I am slightly disappointed that this AVR and its $1300 MSRP only delivers 100 clean watts, vs. my now vintage model has 125 WPC clean power. Honestly shouldn't matter in real-live, but Gene is right. Amps are taking a far back seat in the chase for more features, and I can't say I like it.
