Negotiating suggestions with a speaker dealer?

So they should sell everything at cost and eat the labor and carrying inventory? No profit translates into a labor of love; aka not a business. Business is about making at least some profit to keep the business running and you can't lump all the ID companies together because they aren't all that way. Everything you own that you didn't make or grow has some profit built in somewhere; that's the grease in the machine. The ID companies still offer a far better value than what you'll find in any store at the same quality not price point.
We all have our own opinions. RBH I can get 80% off retail (not all models) I don't own them, you wonder why. I can get you a great deal on Bose too 60%+ off retail, don't own them either. Now you take the Philharmonics and Salk that's a different story, but the chinese crap no way.

Some speaker manufacturers don't want their dealers to negotiate prices. I know Dynaudio is pretty strict on that but I have gotten my local Dynaudio dealer to take off 15% when I bought new.
Some manufacturers don't care too much. Especially Def Tech. My local Def Tech dealer will offer me their speakers at 25% below retail all day every day.
I agree with the others that 20% is fair to both parties. And for higher priced speakers ($5k plus) I would expect at least 25% off.

Yes, I was referring to the likes of Dennis (Philharmonics), Salk and GR, not the "other" stuff. REAL ID companies, not a mass production house posing as a small company.

Another suggestion, is find someone on the forums who has a good Audio guy for the products you want. I recently referred a person to my dealer for his Golden Ear purchase and he was very happy with the deal.

I knew that you and I where on the same page. When it says designed and engineered in USA, you know you've been had. I've listened to the Phil'3 and a Salk Center and you can tell these speakers where made with love. That's the kind of company that I'll support.

First of all, you should buy speakers that fit you best and sound the best to you. That's the 1st step before arguing about which is more cost effective. That 1st step should weed out most speakers.

Then the 2nd step is finding out which one you can get for the best price, assuming you have more than one speaker that fit you best. If the ID brand is cheaper, you buy that. If you can get a better price on the B&M brand, then buy B&M.

You can argue all day long about which is more "cost effective" and "the middle man" and economy of scale, etc.. It doesn't get anywhere.

You buy the speakers that sound the best to you at the best price you can get. Period.
