Hi all, I want to buy a new preamp, as mine is now 38 years old! I really don't want to spend more than $850.00. I want to buy new, any suggestions? I went the Emotiva route, and that did not work out.

How can anybody answer a post like that? What is it going to be used for, and what is going to be connected to it, and what will it connect to?

I just want to know what's available in that price range. My guess is not much. That's all I have to spend, so I can't afford to be too picky. Just want something that sounds good, and is reliable. At this price it's really not rocket science!

If it's not rocket science then figure it out for yourself.

Okay I'll bite an give you an non rocket scientist answer.

Here is a good guitar pre-amp on ebay for $699 :ROCKTRON VooDu Valve guitar pre amp W / EFFECTS

It sounds good for gutiars and since you were so flip about what you were going to use it for I thought this was a good answer.

On the other hand there are some pretty good AVRs for $850 but then again don't know what you really want so this might not work ( usually pre-pros for AVRs are toward the high end of the equipment and beyond the $850 unless you buy used on ebay or Craig's list)

Here a great AVR pre-pro for a little over $805 , but at $899 it also comes with some amp power for free :D Marantz SR7002 receiver THX 110w x 7ch HDMI home theater surround

About the closest item to your price is $990 is NAD T163 Preamp / Processor / Tuner

Thanks. I think I'll go with the Parasound p3. Seems to be the best deal out there in a dedicated preamp.

I'd usually say "Welcome to Audioholics"
but I can see the unofficial welcoming committee has beat me to it.:mad::mad:

So let's start from scratch...

1. Please tell us what Emotiva pre amp you had that didn't work for you and what were the issues you had with it.

2. Then if you could tell us a little about the system you have and the components it will help determine the amount of needed I/O.

3. What type of amplifiers are you going to be using this pre amp with?

4. Lastly, we really need to know where you're located since there are issues associated with availablility and voltages in countries other than the USA.

I suggest an AVR with pre-amp outs. Like the Onkyo SR705. It goes for 400 at accessories4less.

This question was asked in three different forum sites. No one was able to help.
Tony, i suggest you look for a used dual mono, epoxy glass board, straight signal path mos-fet high end preamp with separate power supply and phono stage if possible.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I'm going hold off a bit on the purchase. Thanks for all the input.

I also think the Halo P3 is a good choice for a brand new stereo preamp for around $800.

Just out of curiosity, why didn't the Emotiva preamp work out for you?

Good post and good questions. I don't know why others had to be so jerky...

What a rough welcome. It really isn't bad on here, I don't know why everyone was being pricks.

Not that I'm an Emo fanboy, but I'd love to why also.
He had problems with intermittent remote volume control, and he thought the phono section of the RSP-2 was too noisy (hiss) at full volume. His 38yo pre is quieter. I think Emotiva replaced his unit once.

The Emotiva probably had more gain. We now know he plays LPS. I know the OP wants new, but for vinyl in my view the ultimate preamp is the Quad 44.

This was the last preamp designed by the late Peter Walker OBE. This preamp has dip switches on the top, that allow you to set the gain for the cartridge you are using, and also the load capacitance. It has tilt control and filters at 10, 7 and 5 kHz to get rid of HF distortion and surface noise on less than stellar LPs. I personally think that all Peter's designs have about the longest trouble free life of any electronics I know of. That was always a big concern of his, and a priority of design. His 44 plays back vinyl like nothing else.

If the OP is into vinyl he should put it in his eBay watch list and snap one up.
