hi there, i need help with the connections. i'm not good when it comes to connecting cables with my dvd, tv, etc. i know it sounds so basic, but to me, they're quite confusing.
here's my dilemma. i do have a samsung dvd/vhs recorder (it has component output, av 1 in, av out and s-source). i just recently changed my cable box to a hd cable box with time warner. (the hd cable box has hdmi output and component only). my tv, which happens to be a samsung too has hdmi output, component, s-source. i tried connecting my recorder using the component cable from my hd cable box to my recorder- it didn't work. i'm having problem setting up the channel. i was able to used the recorder before, but back then the settings for the channels were all on channel 3. what do i do now? need help. thanks.

The Time Warner cable box won't output component and HDMI at the same time. If you set it to component and connect that and the DVD player to the receiver, you can do all of your switching with the receiver, the cable box can be set for one output, the TV can be set for its native input and it will make changing from one source to another more seamless.

Channel 3 setup means that you modulated your video which means that you were using the absolute worst possible video connection possible - bar none.

You can connect the HDMI output from the cable box to your TV.

You can use the component VIDEO output from your DVD-R AND connect the audio output (red/white) to your TV.

DVD recorders can't record HDTV but your cable box may (MAY!) output over coax on channel 3 like you used to see, but without an exact make/model for your cable box I couldn't possibly tell you.

I'm pretty sure my Fios box by Motorola will output on channel 3 even when I'm watching TV via component video, but I'm not 100% positive.

If your DVD has a tuner built in, you could connect cable directly to it and get (maybe) some analog channels for recording.

This is why most cable companies offer DVR service so you can record directly to the cable box itself, then watch a show and delete it if you want to.
