Hi...Newbie, here. I recently bought a Sony HT-DDW670 receiver w/speakers and sub from circuit city. I'm not at all happy with the sound and the speakers are just wimpy. The receiver is rated at 600W and is 5.1 surround system. I want to upgrade the speakers since I don't have the money to start all over and buy a new receiver. So what speakers would be a good match for this receiver? I was looking at the Athena Micra 6, Klipsch Quintet II or II, or JBL SCS145.5. I watch alot of movies and play music and I like my bass. I'm not looking for anything too "bright". Thanks alot for any advice!

BTW, I know I posted this in the Beginners forum, but I wasn't sure if it would get the attention like it would here.

Hello Miguel

That power rating sounds for your amplifier is very high and I doubt whether it gives a true indication of system power. It might be a peak music power rating or something like that. Therefore it may not be suitable for driving speakers other than the ones it is supplied with.

Virtually any 8 ohm speaker will work just fine with your receiver. It's up to you to pick which one you think sounds best.

For about $300, the athena micra 6 is a good option. For a little more, check out the Athena Audition seies and BIC venturi speakers. They run about $100 a pair.

Also investigate the connection options of your current receiver to the sub. Some HTIBs have an onboard amp which connects to a passive sub. Most real subwoofers are active (power cord and internal amp) and use a line level connection from the receiver.
