I've used the same room/speakers with a variety of amp levels and it really makes little difference except perhaps at high volume levels where a more powerful amp can have an advantage. I've used avrs with 100wpc-150wpc with same speaker setup then added external amps of 250-450wpc (on the mains) and found little difference except as mentioned, at the upper limits. My speakers are relatively easy to drive (good sensitivity and not super-low impedance and/or phase angle issues) and that can help.
