I am thinking about buying a Denon 3311CI to replace my home theatre system in the living room. The room is 21' by 14'. I currently have a 55" Sony flat screen T.V. with Sony DAV-HDX500 home theatre system and a Sony Blu-Ray BDP-S500, and a PS3. I am looking for advice on new speakers and sub for the Denon 3311CI for $800.00 -$1500.00 price range.

Start with this 5.1 set and call and ask them if they'd be willing to replace the sub with an extra pair of surround speakers for 7.0 instead.

I'm sure the included sub is actually very nice, very tight and can get rather loud by being senstive but there seems to be a stigma against 10" subs and 100 watt subs so that'd leave us with ~800 budget for a big high wattage sub that can dig low for movies!:

are some excellent choices.

you budget seems to be a little out of whack...the 3311ci is a pricey a/v receiver and spending that much on your electronics is limiting your speaker budget (1/3rd electronics, 2/3rds speakers). What feature does the 3311ci have that you truly need (internet audio maybe) that a 1611 or 1911 will not provide?

If you're in the US you can buy a refurbished Onkyo TX-NR708, get those features, and still have $500 left over to put with your $1500 for a total of $2000 for really good speakers and a solid sub.

OneCall has long discontinued Boston Acoustics VR3 towers (MSRP $1250) bundled with a matched VRC center (MSRP $400) for $810 shipped. I've owned these and they sound great and are super easy to drive. But they do need 18-24" behind them and at least 2 feet to the nearest side wall. Add a $700 SVSound PC12-NSD subwoofer and you should be in great shape. Note the matching surrounds are no longer available but there are many things that will work.

Or you could buy re-certified Ascend Sierra-1 bookshelves and a matched center for roughly $1100, add the timbre matched surrounds ($300), and add the $700 SVSounds PC12-NSD. Note you can always wait on the surrounds.
