my 3 choices are: (ive looked at many so if you have suggestions on any thats great pm me. id like to keep the thread to these)

Granted im new at this, I want a good receiver that I can have for a couple years at least. Less than 1k$. It will be HT based im not a big music listener but that may change. Theres a lot of features that im not going to understand the importance of so please speak up.

my current incoming setup is: http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g296/CarlPardue/LivingRoom.jpg
full 1080p lcd
ps3-blu
HDdvd via A30
HD STB

yamaha RX-v863
yamaha RX-v663
Denon AVR-1909

lets look at pros and cons. From what I can see(IMO)

Denon 1909
http://www.usa.denon.com/AVR1909_Large_Back_rdax_1200x469.jpg

pros
3 hdmi in (I like this)
Full 1080p upconvert
Audyessy EQ (I hear good things about it)
Faroudja DCDi video processing ( these chips are in some awesome tvs)
Cheaper than the 863
I like the zone setup on this unit

cons
Cost more than the 663
No pre outs (my room isnt huge is heres a pic) im not plannig on needing an external amp that this point but who knows.
Less power than the 863
Slightly less power than the 663 90vs95 pc
Less s video and composite (seriously I cant believe people still use that many)

yamaha RX-v663
http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/Images/YEC/AV_Receivers/Views/PV_rxv663_rear.jpg

pros
Cheap
Good power at this price point
Pre outs (again maybe not needed at this time)
Dual sub pre outs (over the denon)
I like the zone setup on this unit also

cons
2 hdmi in (I know I can get a external switcher)
No video up res. (not totally important)

yamaha RX-v863
http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/Images/YEC/AV_Receivers/Views/PV_rxv663_rear.jpg

pros
Plenty of good power
Pre outs (again maybe not needed at this time)
3 hdmi in
Full 1080p upconvert

cons
Price

part 2:

i have some concerns:

1. clipping with the 863
2. ps3 audio compatibility
3. ive heard with the yams i have to change the ps3 color range and re-calibrate the tv.

4. my biggest thought, with my hddvd player. i have some handshake issues over hdmi currently. so im running the unit via component. my TV claims to be 1080p over all inputs. but over the component im only able to get 1080i from the HDDVD player.

with any of these AVR's is it safe to expect to input the component HDDVD player and it upconvert to 1080p via hdmi ? (which would be a good thing for the 663 since ill only have 2 hdmi ins)

my other thought is if i get one of the avrs with 3 hdmi ins that may correct the handshake problem.

From what you've posted, your choices are the Denon vs. the 863.

You mentioned power on the no-preout Denon. However, you didn't list your speakers. Please tell me you're not trying to buy a receiver before you buy your speakers?

Toshibas (and most modern components) won't output 1080p over component. That's just the wishes of Hollywood. I wouldn't even use 1080p on an A30 unless I were using 1080p24.

As long as the AVR's accept PCM over HDMI, your HD DVD and Blu-Ray player are fine.

No comment on the Ps3/Yammy calibration issue, as I don't know.

Out of those I would get the 863.

Since AccuDT already broke your rule of only speaking of the AVRs you listed, I will follow his lead and hands down, suggest the RX 1800 which can be had for 1K after some sweet talk with most dealers.

Oh, yeah?:D

Two can play this game!:D

Since we're up into the $1K budget now, how about these apples:

Denon 3808 w/ 1 yr warranty:
http://www.dakmart.com/product_info.php?products_id=6516&osCsid=boljo6juurh2shvs4p2or6l133

However, for the price of < $500, I just don't see how you can beat the Onkyo 805 (130 watts x 7 ch).

Onkyo 875 - This thing is 140 watts x 7, Burr-Brown PCM 1796 DACs, Silicon Optix Reon, 4 HMDIs:

Onkyo 875 for $850 w/ 1 yr warranty:

Onkyo 805 w/ 1 yr warranty for $580:

I am just not a fan of the Onk and related issues they have been having. My last Yammy lasted 15 years before I gave it to a neighbor's kid and I can still hear it going strong when I walk by his house.

He might wait around for the Onkyo 875 to go back in stock at ecost for $745. This thing is 140 watts x 7, Burr-Brown PCM 1796 DACs, Silicon Optix Reon, 4 HMDIs:

http://www.ecost.com/Detail/Receivers/Onkyo/TXSR875+REF/41704080.aspx

The Onkyo 875 was IN STOCK just yesterday for only $709!!! Somebody snatched up that deal in a hurry. Good for them!

i have a new sub on way and front JBL fronts as of now.

thats odd and a interesting theory. funny that a monitor will claim to accept 1080p over component but nothing outputs 1080p over component?

what are you thoughts on the latter of my post about hte handshake ?

can you comment on if they do ?

may i ask why you have a denon aimed sig but suggest used onks ?
Well, I love Denon, Definitive Technology, and Optoma, but that doesn't mean I have to recommend them, does it?:D

I don't see any problem with buying a refurbished Onkyo from Accessories4Less with 1 year warranty included. You could also buy an extended warranty.

But, yeah, I prefer Denon over everything else! They just tend to cost a lot more than everything else.:D

Personally, if I did not buy Denon, I would buy the Yamaha Z11. Now that is one bad boy!:D

...But then I would have to wait for Yamaha to come out with a blu-ray player to match the Z11.:D

I think the 2809 would be great: TrueHD/DTS HD MA + 4 HDMIs + 7.1 Pre-Out just in case you want to add an external amp in the future.

There's nothing interesting (Sucky? Yes!) about it. HDMI exists to please Hollywood, some people who are understandably happier with one cable instead of 4-10 plus those people people who truly think HDMI is better because it is all digital. It's pretty much a given that most modern components--Blu-Ray players, HD DVD players, upconverting DVD players and cable set top boxes won't output 1080p over component. To please the content producers, it's just not enabled by manufacturers.

Your handshake issues can be a number of things. They can be issues with your player, your cables or your display. I'm no lover of HDMI. However, it is what we have. Have you tried the cheapest option--which is to get another HDMI cable ($2 DVIGear or $4 from monoprice)? What firmware version is your A30 running?

BTW, I thought you had already decided on your 3 choices. If Onkyo is allowed then by all means consider a TX-SR805 or a TX-SR875 (easily found new for under $1k from an Onkyo authorized reseller).

Also, which JBL fronts (JBL makes a lot of speakers from the lower end Stage Venues to some pretty high end commercial stuff.) are you getting? Moreover, what's the sub? Are you getting any surrounds or just fronts?

The 663 offers the best bang for the buck!

The so-called PS3 issue is a red herring; just set the PS3 output to limited and it uses the same video standard as DVD, HD--DVD, BluRay, cable and satellite boxes.
