my 3 choices are: (ive looked at many so if you have suggestions on any thats great pm me. id like to keep the thread to these)

Granted im new at this, I want a good receiver that I can have for a couple years at least. Less than 1k$. It will be HT based im not a big music listener but that may change. Theres a lot of features that im not going to understand the importance of so please speak up.

part 2:

i have some concerns:

1. clipping with the 863
2. ps3 audio compatibility
3. ive heard with the yams i have to change the ps3 color range and re-calibrate the tv.

4. my biggest thought, with my hddvd player. i have some handshake issues over hdmi currently. so im running the unit via component. my TV claims to be 1080p over all inputs. but over the component im only able to get 1080i from the HDDVD player.

with any of these AVR's is it safe to expect to input the component HDDVD player and it upconvert to 1080p via hdmi ? (which would be a good thing for the 663 since ill only have 2 hdmi ins)

my other thought is if i get one of the avrs with 3 hdmi ins that may correct the handshake problem.

You mentioned power on the no-preout Denon. However, you didn't list your speakers. Please tell me you're not trying to buy a receiver before you buy your speakers?

Toshibas (and most modern components) won't output 1080p over component. That's just the wishes of Hollywood. I wouldn't even use 1080p on an A30 unless I were using 1080p24.

As long as the AVR's accept PCM over HDMI, your HD DVD and Blu-Ray player are fine.

No comment on the Ps3/Yammy calibration issue, as I don't know.

Out of those I would get the 863.

Since AccuDT already broke your rule of only speaking of the AVRs you listed, I will follow his lead and hands down, suggest the RX 1800 which can be had for 1K after some sweet talk with most dealers.

i have a new sub on way and front JBL fronts as of now.

Well, I love Denon, Definitive Technology, and Optoma, but that doesn't mean I have to recommend them, does it?

I don't see any problem with buying a refurbished Onkyo from Accessories4Less with 1 year warranty included. You could also buy an extended warranty.

But, yeah, I prefer Denon over everything else! They just tend to cost a lot more than everything else.

Personally, if I did not buy Denon, I would buy the Yamaha Z11. Now that is one bad boy!

...But then I would have to wait for Yamaha to come out with a blu-ray player to match the Z11.

HDMI exists to please Hollywood, some people who are understandably happier with one cable instead of 4-10 plus those people people who truly think HDMI is better because it is all digital. It's pretty much a given that most modern components--Blu-Ray players, HD DVD players, upconverting DVD players and cable set top boxes won't output 1080p over component. To please the content producers, it's just not enabled by manufacturers.

Your handshake issues can be a number of things. They can be issues with your player, your cables or your display. I'm no lover of HDMI. However, it is what we have. Have you tried the cheapest option--which is to get another HDMI cable ($2 DVIGear or $4 from monoprice)? What firmware version is your A30 running?

BTW, I thought you had already decided on your 3 choices. If Onkyo is allowed then by all means consider a TX-SR805 or a TX-SR875 (easily found new for under $1k from an Onkyo authorized reseller).

so running my stb with hdmi is over kill its never 1080p

tried many cables mono's hdmi and some others. im currently using some belkin compoent may try somehting else later.

the stage venues now and the ed a2-300 subwoofer.
