Hi, I'm the bastard across the street!

IMAGINE??

Just kidding!

a few questions for you...

1. Total square footage of house
2. What state are you in?
3. How much did this run you to do?

Seriously, I have no life.
Well, after a month of crappy weather, they 'broke ground' on my new house last week. So far only the blocks have been set and footers poured. Foundation should be complete by the end of the week.

This is largely a DIY house; my father-in-law is a contractor and is the contractor for this build. I've helped him in the past lay tile, hardwood, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. This time, I'll finally be doing it for my own house. We expect to be finished in May. We are planning to sell it in about 2 years; we will probably build a couple more times so that our 3rd/4th house will be paid in full. That's the beauty of having a badass father in law.

A few specs are:
1.033 Acres
3600sqft
500sqft bonus room for my HT setup
22x20 garage
10x10 workshop attached to garage

The rest are just details as I only care about the stinking garage. I've not had a garage in 2 years and I CAN'T WAIT to finally have one!

We've already managed to stay $8k under our budget for the build. This weekend alone we saved $2800 on brick and about $500 on tile thanks to a local clearance sale. We buy store demos from Lowe's and ordered our lighting online. Hopefully the woman will let me put that money toward the media room.

I've already started mapping out the HT room (think 4 IB 15's manifolded into the room). I'll eventually start posting build pics in a thread in the member's gallery. I just wanted to share my excitement a few pics with you guys. :)
Your garage and workshop are way too small, IMO. If you can build a 3 car, 26' deep, you can have a work bench across the back of one bay and if you decide to sell, it'll be easier.

1. ~ 4000sqft now.
2. Alabama
3. I'd rather keep that private. I'll just say that the loan/apprasial ratio is less than 60% by building ourselves.

too late to change it now, but maybe in the future...

Hey fellas! I haven’t been around much at all in a while! I’ve been busy slaving away at my house the past couple weeks. Things are coming along well. Roof is done and brick began last week. The rain is causing some delays with the brick, though.

So, inside the house almost all the electrical is done. I spent this weekend running dual cat5 runs to every room in the house except the kitchen and the garage, where there is only a single run to those rooms for phone and internet respectively.

Started a couple runs of rg6 for the TV. But, we stopped after only getting the garage TV and the HT room wires ran. I’m currently trying to decide just how important quad shielded RG6 is and if it’s really needed. The satellite company is saying to run that AT LEAST to the rooms that will have HD, but my friend who worked for them says that they never even used it and just used standard rg6. The thing is, that the QS isn’t but about $40 more than the standard rg6 via the internet so for that small price difference, I think it might be best to just go ahead and do dual runs of QS to every room so that all bases are covered. Really, it’s only costing me about $85 for 1000’ of QS and my time, which isn’t too bad for peace of mind.

Sheetrock went up in the garage only; have to wait for insulation to go up in the rest of the house.

Decided against paying $50-100 for a fancy A/V closet box and instead of just going DIY. I attached a picture (crappy quality) of that.

Monoprice order should be in Friday so I’ll start running the wires for the HT room. I made a box for the IR repeater and also made a network drop for the receiver in case it’s upgradeable via the ‘net.

My only bit of confusion lies in how I’m going to split the cat5 up. I suppose I’ll just have a main run going to the box like everything else, and just split the rooms off that. We’ll be using wireless, but I just wanted the ability to have hardwired LAN if I needed it.

This is something you could probably do a MLS search on.

EH: your build sounds like it is progressing nicely!
I wish I could. I need a town and county ;) otherwise I would

a 4Ksqf house on long island would be close to $900 to 1.6 Million to buy...

Nowhere near as nice as your HT build, though! I’m BEYOND jealous of that thing!

This is definitely a learning experience for me. Next time I’ll have more understanding and be able to do more a bit more easily.

Thanks, guys.
