My local shop finally got some Smith and Wesson Military/Police compacts in. Unfortunately they only got the 9mm so far but he said I could swap it for a .40 when they become available.

Going to take it to the range tomorrow and then I have my CCW permit class the following weekend.

Very compact. Looks like a comfortable piece. Let us know how you like it.

My brother is an undercover agent for the Ohio Investigative Unit. He takes me to the shooting range when he's in town. He's got some nice pieces himself.

He had an interview today with the Secret Service. Said it went well. I hope he gets the job.

It fits great with the magazine extension and the interchangeable grip. I have the large grip on it now but the medium fits comfortably also.

SS is a great organization to get into. I've worked with them quit a bit in the past on POTUS and VPOTUS missions.

Should be a nice tactical piece. I've had my model 1911 9mm a long time; I actually like to shoot it better than my .45. Cheaper!

I bought a couple boxes of some cheap Lellier and Bellot 115gr FMJ for the range and then got a box of Hornady 147gr TAP FPD for personal defense.

A friend of mine picked up a Sig Sauer for his CCW piece. Its action is apparently smooth like buttah.

I would suggest a .357 revolver for a few reasons. The first reason is that a revolver will NOT fail and/or jam like an automatic will. Yes, newer automatics are high quality and really shouldn't have an issue, but I'd rather be SURE. The second bonus is that a .357 can fire .357 magnum, .38+P and .38 Special. If you plan on having your wife be able to operate it, I would load specials. Don't worry, it's still a hell of a round! Police in the US carried .38 specials for a long time. You can find 7-round revolvers for reasonable prices, though I would still insist that you opt for a high quality weapon like a Smith and Wesson or Ruger.

If you feel the want or need for an automatic, there are many choices. Sig Sauer makes excellent weapons, as does Glock. As for the cartridge size, 9mm is the best option all around. It's inexpensive, relatively low recoil, while still being almost as powerful as a .45 or .40S&W. And honestly, with the capacities available for 9mm, it isn't an issue. I know for a fact that both Sig Sauer and Glock, as well as many other manufacturers, offer 17+1 capacities on their automatics in 9mm.

Of course, another great option is a Remmington 870 12-gauge shotgun. Everyone knows what a shotgun racking sounds like. It's a sound that means business.

I have to stress though, just remember to respect your firearms. They are all created for a single purpose: to kill. Keep this in mind every time you handle a weapon. Yes, shooting is fun, but it's important to be safe above all.

oh I hate shooting (even with ear guards, it's too loud for me)
I've been around Beretta 92Fs (we have four of these scattered around home and work) all my life - me and my dad have had so many close calls with it. my dad's trash can can attest to that. when I was a kid, I hit my nose with the guns recoil (stupid me holding it too close to my face)

so yes, I need a 9mm pistol ... because it's free ammunition for me.
I need an automatic ... because I can't shoot for sh*t
I WILL get a revolver for my wife as well. (good point on the .357 shooting .38s)

hee hee. i've been dilly dallying joining a gun forum - forgot how many of you guys are packin.

Mike...what are the general laws governing firearm ownership and concealed carry in the Philippines?

Over here the states and municipalities have differing laws. It's good to live in Oregon where one can still defend one's family. I don't know if you heard, but the Second Amendment was just defended by a (District) Supreme Court decision regarding the right to private gun ownership in the District of Columbia. (This is/was a big deal because of the stated definition of the Second Amendment by the court..that "the people" really means everyone and not some National Guard militia.) The draconian laws banning ownership in DC were found unconstitutional. Ironically, those places with the strictest gun control laws are usually those places with the highest gun murder rates...DC amongst the highest. The dissenting, minority decision disagreed with the majority court decision on the basis that residents of DC WERE NOT COVERED BY THE FEDERAL LAWS OF THE UNITED STATES!!! (and therefore the U.S. Constitution). Now isn't that silliness of the highest order?! :D Incidentally, there is a town in Georgia (can't remember the name...maybe someone will chime in with it), that has the lowest firearm murder rate in the nation (for a town of its size)...where it is municipal law that EVERY household must have a firearm. How about that?!

Because of this one idiot Cho, and general news media and public over-reaction, we'll certainly see the hue and cry re-raised by the gun control folks in the legislature. If Hillary is elected Queen, there is one constitutional right that is in great jeopardy, IMHO.

By the way, I'm not one to recommend a purchase of any 9mm (or .38 spl) pistol. Research has proven them time and again to NOT have adequate stopping power. In a time of attack, you want something that will stop the attacker. That means a reasonably heavy caliber...such as .45 acp or perhaps .357 at a minimum (maybe .38+p). Someone suggested a shotgun. There is no better in-home deterrent than that. And he's correct, just the sound of a 12 ga. slide being racked is a pretty good deterrent in itself, lol. The choice and recommendation of the great pistoleros of our time is the venerable M1911 semi-auto in .45 acp. If you are healthy and strong enough to handle a .45, that should be your primary pistol selection.

Mike,

For a pure home defense weapon I'd recommend a shotgun like the 870 that Jaxvon recommended or a Mossberg 500. Shotguns are very easy to operate even for your wife and have the ability to stop an intruder with one shot.

I'm getting an 870 tactical next month.

I personally like my Glock 32 (.357 SIG) and my Colt Double Eagle Officers (.45 ACP) for carry. The Colt is heavy but tricked out enough to make up for the weight.

I would go with a Glock, SIG or H&K for carry and reliability. Berretta's are nice but fairly large. I also would never carry a 9mm. (The .357 SIG is my compromise) Some of the new compact .40's, 10mm or .45 ACP's are great options.

It's not my habit to post in the Steam Vent, but man oh man, you Americans really do love your guns. As a Canadian, it's not something I can really understand.

Matt, you're right -- mouettus' comment wasn't funny. But to a lot of Canadians, just knowing that a particular individual owns -- or even wants -- a gun . . . it makes us a little uneasy. We sorta think, "Why would you need one? Are you looking to hurt or kill someone? Holy crap, is this guy stable?" It's really unnerving to know that someone wants the ability to kill people. I'm not trying to start a debate, but with all the gun-related deaths (accidental or not), I'd prefer a world that didn't include guns. (Typical Canadian, eh?)

I'm not trying to be preachy, honestly, so please don't flame me. I just honestly don't understand the mentality of wanting to own/use a gun. It scares the hell out of me.

cheers,

I personally like the ability to kill someone breaking into my house to steal my stuff or hurt my family. Look what happened in New Orleans after Katrina. It's clear the government can't protect my family, so I am going to.

For home defense, a shotgun is def. the way to go. Along with what everyone else has said, it's harder to miss with, and has plenty of stopping power.

Long arms such as a shotgun can be difficult to use in close quarters. But they do offer a better target coverage and the ability to use lesser shot to prevent excess penetration in home. Regular bullets will penetrate and continue to travel possibly harming somebody on the other side of the drywall.

I prefer to use frangible rounds for home defense.

We aren't going to flame you.:D

The reason so many Americans find it necessary to have firearms, because there are too many people in this country, regardless of gun laws, that will obtain guns to do their nasty deeds. If all the bad guys have guns and none of the good law abiding citizens are unarmed they are defenseless. Sure we have law enforcement, but they can't stop them all. In home attacks aren't something that a police officer can usually stop.

In concerns with accidental deaths, I agree this is a problem. The problem isn't the firearm however, it is the user. People need to know and use proper gun safety. Keeping firearms in a secure location, too many people do not, can help prevent accidental child death.

Lastly, this goes to anyone reading this, the shotgun is the gun for in home defense. It is good for a couple reasons, it is easy to hit targets, it stops the perp in one or two shots, and it is conspicuous. Imagine someone breaks into your home and you hear them in another room. You get your shotgun and you meat it, no message is clearer. The message, leave unless you want to risk death. The shotgun should be the least likely to be ever fired, so buy a shotgun if killing people is the last thing you want to do, because 9 times out of 10, the sound of the shotgun cocking is enough to send the perp running.

carrying a concealed weapon "right/privilege" here has been suspended indefinitely (unless with special permit by a judge)

ownership by an ordinary citizen:
one shotgun and one pistol I think.

ownership by a citizen that is a member of a gun club
more shotguns and more pistols.

regarding rifles however, no automatic weapons ... mostly limited to shotguns.
regarding pistols, civilians ARE NOT allowed .45 pistols - 9mm and below is ok. I'm trying to confirm .357 and .40, but it might also not be allowed.

since most houses here are concrete, penetration through walls shouldn't be a problem.

shotguns are hard to hide (from kids, from the household help) unless I get a gun rack ... which I have no place for. though, the shotgun brand I see here is Benelli - is that a good brand? (the other brands are locally made)

anybody here have experience with the James Bond Walther (P99?) ?

oh, regarding the comment on why I want guns ... over here, if you surprise a burglar in the act, they might take your life. although it is wrong, if I do get a chance to "surprise a burglar" even if he's not packin', I might not give him a chance to prey on somebody else just on principle.
