Microsoft to support Blu-ray

Chief executive of Microsoft Steve Ballmer has confirmed that his firm is looking at ways to back the HD format Blu-ray.

While Ballmer avoided linking his announcement directly with the Xbox 360, he admitted Microsoft is ready to move on following the demise of HD-DVD.

"We've already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like, and I think the world moves on," said Ballmer at the Mix08 conference.

"Toshiba has moved on. We've moved on, and we'll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense."

Recent news of Sony holding talks with Microsoft has led to many industry insiders expecting the US firm to announce an add-on Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360."

I have absolutely nothing against BD. I don't care if Pontius Pilate joins the ranks, BD too is doomed for failure as long as it remains content remaining a niche. It's that simple.

That said, once BD comes out with a decent player w/ no glitches and a mass of software titles in the $10-$15 range...I too will join ranks...perhaps.

With all the announcements from major companies over the last two months all centering around how they intend to push the format to the consumer as the next best thing, only a fool would suggest they are content to remain as they are.

Not enough. Not nearly. Schooling? More PR? A small step in the right direction, but until they make their prices reasonable, the masses won't buy. And I'd put money on that. Not nearly enough.

I support BD and have stopped buying for now, the movies are too expensive. They really need to get the prices back in line, under $20 is reasonable.

They know they need some sort of high capacity disc media for their next gen xbox, so why not just jump on the bandwagon now and start getting support from their followers.

I agree. AC3RED posted a HUGE sale at Amazon...but most of those titles are old, and have been on sale repeatedly. Should they drop in the $10 and $15 range (for most titles), they will gain my interest as well, and I believe the mass market's.

Allmost two months have passed and the rumours of the Blu Ray addons were destroyed.
It seems they're back again, this time with a 3rd quarter 2008 release date: dailyTech
