Man Down . . . please help w/ my very sad incident

My current dilemma:

To date, I've both emailed & posted my quandary to Paradigm's FB page . . . requesting help; however, thus far I've received no reply; so, I thought I'd drop a line here & see if anyone would have a suggestion or two:

A well meaning family member had a run in w/ my Paradigm Studio ADP-590 surround speaker . . . & the 590 lost . . . (it fell off a 36" speaker stand, to which it was affixed, & onto a tile floor). . . grrrr!!!

Is it realistic to hope to have this repaired to 'like new' condition . . . or am I SOL in that regard . . . & if so, any thoughts on how I might proceed w/ this . . . ~or~ . . . if not, what purchasing options are there for someone at an APO address . . .

My thanks to anyone who takes the time to sympathize w/ my plight & offer a possible solution.

Regards,

Shek5150

That's too bad, hate to see damaged speakers.

I wasn't 100% sure from your picture. If the cabinet is cracked, you'll need a new speaker.
Did you try bringing it to the dealer and get their input?
Or maybe finding a used one on the inter-web and using it for parts?

Good Luck

Those little parts and pieces in the pic are from the top left of the woofer. I'm thinking glue and some touch up paint would get him most of the way back. Throwing that family member out in the street would make me feel better.

Looks like the corner of the woofer's baffle is missing. Not sure that can be glued.... The labor alone to rebuild that speaker would cost more than a new speaker. Es tut mir leid für Ihren Verlust!

Build a new better box for it. That box was a poorly constructed disgrace in the first place.

Hey guys . . . thanks to all of you . . . I was fearful that the repair costs would be cost prohibitive . . . <insert sadness emoticon here> . . .

Alex2507, believe me . . . when I heard the 'THUD' of that thing hitting the floor . . . there were MAAANY options that ran thru my head; however, the WAF of your suggestion would not be in my favor . . . as it's my father-in-law that knocked it over . . . he's a really good guy, but at 82 yrs old . . . he has issues w/ balance . . . so, I do fault myself for not planning ahead . . . did I already say "Grrrr!!!!" . . . (p.s., he did offer to pay for it; but I didn't have the heart to tell him the cost . . . I think the price of speakers have increased a bit since his first victrola.)

Rickster71, I did contact the point-of-purchase vendor & he was pretty timely w/ the following reply:

Steve,[/COLOR]
The good news is that I can get you a new cabinet without the drivers. Cost would be $450.00, and this would be available by end of August. The price of a new single ADP-590 is $900.00.

Thanks, Deniz

Side Note: I'm not sure why it would take so long for the replacement enclosure . . . but I guess it doesn't really matter, since I'll likely just purchase (gulp) a replacement speaker . . . ((((on the plus side, I suppose I'll have replacement drivers for my surrounds)))) . . .

Side Note #2: I am really pleased w/ my Paradigm speakers over these past couple years; however, I must say I'm very disappointed w/ their customer service regarding tho issue . . . as I said, I've attempted to contact them on three separate occasions & a big ole' NADA! . . .

TheWarrior, thanks for your sympathy . . . I think I'm suffering from PTSD . . . when I hear any sound that approximates that same thud . . . my heart sinks . . . Douuu!!!!

Anyway, thanks guys . . . I appreciate you taking the time . . .

</insert>Throw her out too. :D

As a temporary measure you could glue it back up while the other cabinet shows up. That would save you $450. If the $900 for a new one is a non issue then you're all set anyway.

At least you already know what you want. That's usually half the battle.

It's magical . . . I swear . . . I initially emailed Paradigm a few days ago . . . & followed-up w/ a post to their FB page (which they appeared to remove, w/ my pic) . . . let time pass & nothing . . . today, I post here to you guys (on Audioholics) . . . and BAM-BABY!. . . I get two emails from Paradigm Tech Folks . . .

I'm sure it's likely coincidence . . . but go figure, . . . & they've given me an address for an authorized dealer/repairer here in Germany . . .

IN any case, thanks again for the replies . . .

Man, that picture brings tears to my eyes. I bet your father-in-law felt horrible. You're a good man for letting him off the hook.

I was going to ask if you'd checked what it sounds like (pieced together as best you can) while you wait for a new cabinet/speaker, but I'm happy to see that Paradigm got back to you on a repair shop. Best of luck with it!

Sometimes a turtle does make it (show up) - and being kind also helps.

Looks like things will work out - however, still try the glue thing and some
filler (patch) for now - and when you listen, try not to look at the speaker.

Hope that the adventure all works out for you.

Hey Adam,

I'll play around w/ it once they leave . . . if I pull it out while he's still here . . . he'll try to pay me for it; so, I'll begin to mess w/ it next week & see what happens.

Thanks for your reply.

Hey Zieglj01,

Thanks for the reply & I will tinker w/ the speaker next week (once my in-laws have left) . . . like I told Adam, my father-in-law is a good guy & would try to pay me if he sees me tinkering w/ it (& he really can't afford that kind of unexpected expense) . . . anyway, I'll give it a go next week & hope for the best . . . I was just trying to do some recon in the mean time . . .

Thanks again for the reply.

I can sympathize my niece accidently backed into my NXG 4.1 speaker and fell on the wooden floor:eek:, but wouldn't know it the darn thing is of solid build and barely got scratched(phew) for only 50$ each.

Not sure what dealer you got your speakers from, but had an easy time repairing the amp in my Seismic 12 twice. Well, besides the actual work of removing my amp for a 70lb sub :). It helped that they know my dealer by name very well and took care of my problem relatively quickly. In my case, it only cost me about $75.00. I will say they are $$$ on replacement parts, It cost $60 for a speaker grill for my old CC-690 v4 I used to have, that is just stupid money, but I was reselling it and one of the plastic knobs broke off. Depending on what version of the ADP-590v4 or 5 could effect price, because they used to outsource speaker cabinets to China on the Studio series when they went with the more rounded cabinets until they brought it back in house (Canada) on v5.

I have those speakers, and while I am no professional I don't believe the cabinets are cheap if they break from a 3 foot fall on tile. They are about 20+ pounds and pretty much didn't stand a chance :)

I have mine mounted on walls so if it falls, its done for. Speakers have always been in the $900 price range list, so no real price increase.

. . . it's seems like my 'take home message' from all the posts (& my Paradigm Dealer) is that it's going to be $$$ regardless . . . so, I'm likely going to end up purchasing a new one and keep the 'old' for parts I suppose . . . particularly since we're not yet done moving . . . & something ALWAYS gets damaged in the moves . . .

Regarding the speaker & the fall, yeah, I don't think it really had a chance . . . it fell on to a tile floor w/ concrete subfloor (from a 36" speaker stand) . . . but again, I don't know much about speaker design & the quality of the cabinet . . . (other than they seemed solid, pre-fall) . . .

Anyway, thanks.

That is great to find that type of build quality in such an inexpensive speaker. Part of the problem with the paradigm is that you have drivers on 3 of the four sides which definitely decreases the structural integrity of the unit. I am sure the 8 extra pounds didn't help either :( This was part of the reason why I wall mounted mine, that along with 2 cats and a 112lb Rottweiler :). He has bumped into my studio 100s a few time and they managed to stay vertical.

I'm terribly sorry to hear about your incident.

I am always so worried when I have guests and they walk near my Philharmonic 2s. The Phils are modular-IOW, the top cabinet rests on top of the large transmission line bass cabinet. Yesterday my 1 year old nephew moved the top cabinet a good 45 degrees to the right and I almost shat myself.

Anyway, if I were you, I would go to parts express TechTalk forum and sell the Studio ADP-590 drivers once you get a new one. You'll make some money, and you'll help the DIY loudspeaker building community.

Good luck! :)

Monkish,

Thanks for the reply & will give your idea some thought . . . though I'd have no clue what to sell the drivers for . . . & I'd also have to consider whether or not I'd prefer to have the extras on hand . . . just in case something like this should happen again -or- have one damaged in the move . . . that being said, thanks for the thought, I hadn't even considered selling the old ADP drivers . . .

Anyway, the father-in-law leaves in a couple days & then I'll begin the foot work on getting this resolved . . . kills me every time I look where that speaker used to be . . . douuu!!!!

Cheers,

Shek
