Magenta/purple tint on TV?

Hi,

After coming back to University after christmas, I noticed that the TV in my room now for some reason seems to have a faint magenta/purple tint across it and the contrast seems to have increased so that the image looks very drab despite me not altering the (perfect to me) colour settings at all. I had calibrated the TV using the BBC test Card W (shown below) that you can access as an easter egg via my Freeview over the air receiver and bringing that up on the screen again, it looked still perfectly calibrated with the brightness/white point and the contrast/black point portions, but the skin tones in the picture in the middle of the card have the distinct purple/magenta tint and the increase in contrast that I can see on all other images. I've tried adjusting the settings slightly to compensate but I can't get rid of the tint unless I boost the colour/red setting until the skin tones look like their sunburnt. As I'm in a PAL country, we don't get tint settings so I can't think what has caused this or how I will adjust it.

The only thing that I did before I went home for Christmas was remove the Freeview recorder and take it with me. After re-installing it I have confirmed that its not the Freeview box as I' ve connected the DVD player directly to the TV and got the same problem and connecting via composite instead of RGB Scart makes no difference.

The only thought that I've got is that the LCD backlight is starting to fail or something but does anyone have any ideas about how to fix this problem as the picture looks unnatural having a purple tint to it.

check your video interconnect wiring. A color tint can sometimes be related to a cable problem.

Already done that, a magenta colour wouldn't be possible with RGB SCART anyway as there are just RGB pins so you can only get a red, green or blue cast and it would be extremely difficult to get just the red and blue pins connected as the green pin is in the middle. A connection problem was my first thought and I've tried with both composite and RGB SCART.

I am now pretty certain that the backlight behind the LCD panel is starting to fail as symptoms of this include a pink/purple tint in dim lighting and a darker image like I've been getting. I'm going to have a go at replacing it with my Dad as I've managed to find a guide and a supplier of replacement LCD CCFL tubes.
In actual brightly lit conditions the problem goes away and looks natural again.

Sorry to bump this, but does anyone have any other ideas for my problem before I start taking the TV to bits to measure the CCFL tube?

No, either you investigate it or you have a professional do it.

Seriously, I have no life.

Any possibility that someone had access to the TV and messed up your settings? By chance record your setting numbers after calibration and checked to see if they are the same now?

No the settings are exactly the same, I remember them distinctly, 52 for brightness, 54 for contrast, 16 for colour, 1 for sharpness and colour temp normal. Besides my room was locked for the whole three to to four weeks and I have the only key apart from the university.

Its pointless having a pro do it for me as the TV's about three years old and not worth the cheapest cost (£99!). The only reason that I really want to have it working again is that its not actually mine, I borrowed it off my parents as all I had was a CRT TV in my bedroom that there was no space for in the car.

My parents are coming up for my Birthday in a couple of weeks and their going to bring my CRT TV that I have in my bedroom at home and take the LCD back and my dad says he'll fit the tube for me. He knows a bit about it anyway as it similar to what he used to do sometimes when he worked for British rail years ago.
