Looking to get an audiophile system...

Hey,

I'm currently planning on getting a good system for my last year in college. Right now I'm looking at a Klipsch system - 2x F3, C3, SUB-12, 2x S3. At max power, it's a 3330 watt system, and at RMS it's 970 watts.

What would be a good reciever to drive this?

And also, for the price (I'm getting a Best Buy discount, so the system would be about $1300), are there any other good 5.1 systems I should consider?

I don't know that I would consider the Synergy line to be "audiophile" quality, but it would make for a pretty good starter system. I think any decent AV receiver will have enough power to drive those speakers. Klipsch speakers are extremely efficient, so a lot of power isn't needed for them to play loud.

You may want to reconsider the sub. See the subwoofer forum for current discussions on the sub-12.

I totally agree. I found the Klipsch Reference line to be night and day over the Synergy line in sound quality.

I feel there are better systems you could purchase for $1300 for sound quality then the Synergy line. But if thats what you like then don't let anyone sway your opinions.

Listen to as many speakers as you can so you'll know what sounds good to you. Bring your oun music and movies to audition so your familiar with the material.

There is a lot of information to get at once. Just remember to take your time and enjoy this. It's fun and rewarding to put a nice system together. Nothing like sitting watching your first movie with a stupid smile on your face the whole time.

In general, the wattage numbers on a loudspeaker have nothing to do with anything.

Also you are unlikely to find any system that outputs true 3300 watts for less than $20,000 (and another $2500 to pay the elctrician to install the circuit breaker to power the amps).

Really, ignore the speakers RMS numbers.

Exactly. Passive (non-powered) speakers have ZERO watts....
