The other day I was helping a buddy do some work in one of his buildings and we found an old amp next to a pile of junk in the basement. Apparently it was left behind by an old commercial tenant. I don't know if it works or not as we didn't have time to play with it. I didn't bother to bring it with me either because it was fairly heavy and I was too tired to carry it a block to the car. He said I could have it if I wanted but I thought if it works we could just put some speakers in his kitchen or back yard and use it to power them.

Anyways, it's a Soundcraftsmen MA5002. I searched online and only found very vague information about the company and little to nothing about this amp. Anybody know anything about the quality or specs and if it's worth keeping/using?

Its a 250wpc class H amp - is this the one with a pair of large VU meters on the front or LEDs? They were made in the late 70s early 80s. You can read a lengthy article about it here. Link was found here.

It's the one with a pair of large meters on the front. I really only looked at it for long enough to write the model and manufacturer name down. I'm not sure of the condition or any real specifics. Sometime in the next week I'll go over and pick it up. It sounds like if it works it may be a decent find.

Unless it had water poured in it, it should work. If it sat for a long time, I would check the power supply caps, but otherwise, it should work fine. Go get it. We sold SoundCraftsman in the early '80s and I don't remember seeing more than a couple that had any kind of problem.
