I am wanting to put in a reasonably priced system in my show barn. I have a pr. of OSD AP640 outdoor speakers I want to power, but I might want to add two more or a small power subwoofer. I just need a no friles FM Tuner that I can hook a CD player to along with an Ipod. The barn is 36x80 so I need something that will crank.

Not sure if I should go with just a receiver or a receiver and add a power amp. Keep in mind this is for a barn, the equipment will be in a cabinet in the office and the speakers are hanging in the isle. We raise show cattle so we spend a LOT of time in the barn and some good tunes would be great but I don't want to spend a lot of money.

Thanks in advance for you help!!

You're gonna need a bigger boat.

Watts won't be your main issue here. That's a lot of square footage to try to cover with two or even four speakers. You may need more speakers if you want fairly even coverage unless your listening will be confined to a fairly small area or two. Near the speakers it may be loud while farther away it may be much, much lower. ...and I'd forget about a stereo image and stick with mono.

A small powered subwoofer won't make a dent in an area that size. It'll be like trying to put out a house fire with a squirt gun.

I realize this will not be like my theater system but right now my son has some cheap liitle plastic stereo system he found at a yard sale, and when I say cheap I mean cheap. he cranks that thing for all it's got. It's loud but thats about it, so I want something a bit better. I have a set of these outdoor speakers on the patio hooked to an old Pioneer system and they work great for the back yard so I think they should be good enough for the barn. I just need something reasonably priced to push them.

I found this on ebay for $127.00 Denon AM FM Stereo Receiver Tuner Amplifier AVR-800 Amp.

Would something like this be a better bet than trying to find something new? What about the Pyle Pro Amps, are they any good?

Denon makes/made good stereos but those speakers can only move so much air without distorting, which is the key to good sound. Dunno about how well it would do cranking away with four speakers (which halves the impedance - bad), though.

Seriously, I have no life.

More speakers means there will be no area where it's blasting and other areas that it's quiet. It also means a simple stereo receiver may not be enough to cover the whole place because the wiring configuration matters. Using an impedance maintainer or speaker selector isn't the best way, either because the power from the amplifier will be shared by ALL speakers so, while the amplifier may put out 100W, if you have 8 speakers, each one only gets 12.5W. If you want this to last a while, I would look at something like the Denon DRA-397 with a Behringer power amp. The A500 would be a reasonable choice- enough power to get the job done (series/parallel) and it's durable. Cheap, too.

I would DIY this thing

But I think it might be a bit coo coo :D

But it would give you nearly the same coverage virtually anywhere in the barn and probably gets loud enough.

Well I am thinking about going with a refurb Onkyo TX-8555 receiver from A4L to go with my AP640s from OSD. From my very limited knowledge of audio specs (hence my user name) I think they should pair up just fine, but if someone does not agree please let me know. The last thing I want to do is toast the receiver amp or my speakers.
