I ran by a local speaker builder the other day, just to check out his line for in-home use. This guy has been around for years and I used some of his car boxes many years ago which were always impressive.

He showed me his drivers and crossovers which don't mean a lot to me. I was thinking that the drivers looked a little 'cheap' but he was really into it so I listened to him.

When we finally loaded up some music, kicked back and let it play, I was blown away. They were some of the best sounding speakers I have heard.

I thought maybe some of you could look into the driver parameters and see what's going on. I wasn't expecting what I heard.

The main drivers are Peerless, Vifa and SEAS- nothing wrong with them and the 6-1/2" with truncated rim are what I have been working with- I like them a lot, so far. They're definitely not shy about the prices but if they can make enough sales, more power to them. The $400 center MPC-2009 has about $100 in drivers at retail, who knows what crossover and a box that may, or may not, be made in-shop. If it was, it's no big deal because they have been around for quite a while. The RC-2010 uses the same 6-1/2. The woofers look like Mitek (MTX) could have made them but I can't see a manufacturer code.

Parts Express and Madisound have the drivers used in their speakers, aside from the electrostatics.

I know someone who bought a sub box from him, for his boat. I don't think I have heard anything bad about them- doesn't his wife work there, too?

Seems like the prices are very negotiable.

It was just an interesting experience, I have no plans of buying anything. Well, he did have some tiny little subs that were rocking, if I could get him down to 200 bucks on one of those, I would put it in my office.
