Load up on HD DVD's??

Hey Guys,

I know, my beloved HD DVD is done. Too bad really but what's done is done.

I just ordered a few old favorites on HD DVD from Deep Discount for $12 each today (fast and furious, 2 fast 2 furious). I am keeping the player and the movies, and plan to buy all the movies I think I'd watch more than once when they get below $15 as some did this week.

Anybody out there planning on stocking up while the gettins good? I see no real benefit to selling this stuff at a loss, besides, who's gonna buy it? I figure the player will last 3-5 years, and I can get my moneys worth out of it easy. It would be nice if somebody could figure out how to hack this thing to add functionality:D I'd like MP3 capability for one.

Now I just need to wait for the $200 profile 2.0 player (or PS3 I guess) to come out so I can watch anything I want in HD!

i have a player, 3 movies i bought and 2 movies that was free.

your question:
buy more movies?

if we do...

my question:
what if our player dies, do we get stuck with a lot of coasters? (assuming there are no more hd dvd players being manufactured in the future - even combo players)

I mean sure, the investment in the player is cheap, but if we add more to our investment, i.e. buying more hd dvd's won't that make this investment unwise?

Yep, coasters. But, we rent movies for $5 (I do), so $12-15 is nothing for one's you'd watch a lot. That's how I think at least. Also, as with Beta in the past, there will still be support and limited service I'd think???? When beta was beat down, Sony sold and serviced players for 2 years if I recall correctly.

I just picked up U571 for 13 bucks. What the heck. Granted the format is all but dead, but considering I paid a hundred bucks for the player and got 5 free discs, I don't see any good reason not to cough up another 13 to get a movie that was on my SD DVD want list anyway.

May be Toshiba will always repair them for a profit. On the other hand, I would not buy any more HD DVD unless they are selling for under $15. At that price, even if the player fails and cannot be repaired, the lost is not hugh consider it costs more to watch the movies in the cinema.

Those who own a large number of hd dvd could consider buying a 2nd one if and when the price drops below $100. Between the two players, they should be good for 10 years or more.

For you guys planning on milking HD DVD for all it's got, buy a second player as a backup and stash it away (when they get really cheap), think of it as cheap insurance if you're going to invest in software.

I was just thinking of that and trying to find an A3 at walmart or best buy in the coming days at the firesale! Can anybody say $50?:D

Yep, $15 is the point for me as that is the cost of most SD DVD's I'd buy.

my main wish right now is that Toshiba will announce their defeat (and build BD players) BUT say that because they do not want their previous customers stuck with coasters, they will build a combo player instead :)

Realistcally, given my small collection, I won't pay more the $25/30 for insurance.

I'll keep buying. I have three on order right now with Amazon. I won't pay $30 for a movie now, but at the cheap prices I will continue to buy. Go figure; I bought anXa2 one week before the bottom fell out.:p

I know I run the risk of losing more money by buying HD, but it's still less money I give to Sony and BD.;) I'm pretty bitter about BD winning, but I'm also spoiled by HD content. I've tried two different Samsung duo players. Both of them have issues.:( Hopefully they will get them straightened out or better yet, Toshiba will come out with a killer duo.;) I'll buy BD in the future because I like movies, but it will be with some hard feelings.

Good point/wishful thinking, I don't mind paying a small premium for it. Let's hope they will do just that..

They won't fellas, they said it in their press conference, they don't want to go near Hi-def dvds right now. The best we're going to get is a Toshiba BD player, I estimate by Black Friday/Christmas they'll bring one out (at best, i'm being an optimist.)

For five discs, I wouldn't bother getting a second player unless you needed a good upconverter on another display. I have over 90 (movies, pr0n, music, etc.) discs. There's no way in hell I would sell those at a loss to rebuy them on Blu-Ray (if and when they become available) at full price. BOGO free deals are gone for now.

I never thought about pawn shops but that might be just the ticket. At $5 or so I could probably get 10 that my son would like on his LCD in his room.

I bought a Toshiba HD A3 for $75.00, i already have the HD A2. I couldn't let a deal like that go by, so i plan to keep an eye open for falling prices on HD movies. I guess my PS3 will be running even more now.

I remember the whole DVD vs DIVX format war. DVD won, then after a few years most the DVD players coming out could also play DIVX movies. If there is still a demand in a few years for a player that can play HD DVD's, then eventually some one may incorporate it again into a universal player. Keyword being "may." Just a consideration.

I agree, this is a different situation than the VHS vs BETA. The Blu-ray, HD DVD thing is mostly digital computing stuff so it is much easier to make a combo/universal player. I think a 2nd keyword is "demand". Where will the demand be, if everyone stops producing HD DVD?
