LFE or Normal on sub?

After doing a little reading here I have set my speakers to small and my cross overs to 80 on the receiver. On the sub my x-over is set to 150 and my volume is set half way up. Now the question is what to do with that toggle. LFE or Normal? It's been on Normal but I do like to ask.

On a side note I wanted to say that I've started to suspect that the spl meter that HK says is in my remote might be a joke. Am I right about that? MDS says not to use the remote as a remote. Wonder what his views on the remote as an spl meter might be. Okay, thanks a lot.

LFE will bypass your amps crossover. Since you are using the receiver's crossover, you don't need it anyway, so flip it to LFE. No use running the signal through two crossovers.

Done. Thanks. I did mean to ask about that instrument that measures for a flat frequency response at various volumes. What are they called and where do you get 'em and how much are they. Thanks again.

Are you talking about the Avia and SPL meter? I just ordered them through SVS.

No, I don't think so. I'm on my way to getting the AVIA also but I don't expect it to do that. I expect an SPL to measure db's but not for a given set of Hz. If I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about it's because I don't.

As Dave said, flip the switch to LFE - in that setting the sub's internal xover is disabled and you will use the xover in the receiver.

I think what you are getting at with respect to measuring frequency response is a Real Time Analyzer. There is a software version I think called TrueRTA that can be downloaded for free. I've never used it so I can't comment on it.

If you have lots of time and really want to do it, you can use the SPL meter too. You'd just have to get a disc with test tones at various frequencies and write down the SPL at each frequency to make your own plot of the frequency response.

My instructions say the same thing you just stated ,80 and LFE on small speaker setting,my Denon says this so this must be pretty standard.I read a thread about this the other day and the answer was the same.
