Congrats, Irv! Sounds like a sweet deal. I wish I had your bargaining skills. Maybe I should go shopping for a car now when I have zero desire for one...easy to walk away. :)

Theres a few tricks to buying cars.. DON'T fall in love... NEVER GO TO THE DEALERSHIP IN PERSON, it sounds like such a good deal you end up signing on the spot... Use the phone, check the dealerships inventory, go to Truecar.com and they will tell you a % below MSRP that car is selling for, so if it says people are buying the car for 13% under msrp you start at 15%... You call the dealership and ask to speak to a salesman, you tell them "I am interested in this car, stock # XXXXX, I want to pay $X amount, I am a very busy person and don't have time to come and dance around the dealership with you, I just need a yay or nay"
Now you will get a few different responses, some dealerships will say "no its impossible", some will say "come down and see us we can not go that low over the phone}, and then one will say," Yah, we can talk more, maybe not that low but in the neighborhood"... But they will all take your phone number and name, expect to be called until you buy the car...

So the one that says they may be able to get there.... You say "give me your best price, because I am going shopping, no offence but I want the car as for the best possible price, I have no loyalty to any of the dealerships in this area or brand so expect someone to give me a great deal to earn my current and future business"....

Now you are going to start getting prices in, for round numbers say they are 12% under msrp at $31500, and 30,555 is 15% where you want to be, but don't even know if it is possible yet, you stand your ground and keep your 30,555 offer on the table, you say stuff like "hey if your manager changes his mind give me a call" Now you wait 7 days, if no one calls you started too low... Call them back, say "hey I noticed you didn't sell that car yet, can you consider my 30,555 offer"? now he calls you back," no bud they can not go below 31250", so if you called 4 or 5 dealerships and you checked that number out {percent wise, not the actual number, they are all going to have different msrp's, even the same car} you know you have the cheapest price...

NOW don't forget there are better times to buy cars than others... When toyota had that recall bs going on in 2010, they were offering record breaking deals, like 0% $5500 cash back, and some dealerships had permission to call toyota themselves with offers, you could have stole anything on their lot, they just wanted cars selling and fast...

You have to treat it like a game, and once you get a history with a dealer you always shop around but expect them to beat every other price... That is what I do, I called another dealer with the price we bought this car for and he said he would buy it for that......

Anyway we just picked it up, my office manager drove it up to the house for me and my wife is going to see it tonight after her doctor leaves around 4:00, I am going to walk her out there and show it to her, hopefully she will feel up to going for a ride, its been rough around here, hopefully this will bring her spirits up, the daytime nurse dressed her in a fancy dress and shoes that I bought her so maybe when I take her outside she will want to go for a ride and maybe go get dinner out somewhere, since we are on day 3 of solid foods with no issues, she eatls like a rabbit anyway, but I am thinking a grilled mushroom greek salad sitting at a table and not lying in bed will make her feel better.... And I will drive her in her new car, that i now fit in..

So we had a good night, my wife wasn't up to eating so we went to the lake house and sat on the lanai for a while, it was gorgeous out 62 degrees and the lake was so quiet, I know she needed that, she didn't want to drive, but she loves the car, already linked her phone to the blue tooth and she set her seat and mirror position in the memory control... She wanted to see how the ev mode worked which is some button that you push to just run on electric but you can't go very fast, so we did 30mph on the way home and averaged 90mpg the entire way, my house isn't far from our lake house only about 3 miles, but at 25-30mph it felt much longer, lol But I didn't mind she had her heated seat on and we listened to her music, it was the only time I wished we lived further from the lake....

Hey, Irv. I missed if you talked about it earlier - sounds like your wife is sick? I hope it's nothing serious.

Thanks for the tips on car buying! Life will be easier once Amazon sells those... :)

Yes, she is not well rite now, pretty serious but she is going to be fine in the end, it's actually the reason I have been on here posting, I have a lot of free time, since I hardly leave the house. I moved all my work duties to the house, I have 2 nurses here everyday 1st and 2nd shift, and the doctor who is a friend of ours comes by often... All will be well, and I thank everyone who has PM'd and emailed me to show their concern, I truly appreciate it...

You can sell cars on amazon, http://allthingsd.com/20130925/nissan-is-selling-cars-through-amazon-gift-cards-included/ I know that would be the last straw for my ups guy, I remember him delivering my emo amps and he was not happy at all, never mind a car..

OK, I knew someone was going to bring it up, the lexus sound system was fantastic... And it is ML designed... But the JBL in the toyota is no slouch, it sounds much better than most other cars, way better than most anyway, not tinny or thin, very strong and full. The model I got her has the best toyota radio they sell so its decent, JBL headunit with jbl sub and components....

I have hard the ML in the past in Lexus and it does sound fantastic. I have a Genesis with the upgrade to Lexicon which also sounds fantastic and owned by the same parent company as ML. Acura is installing Krell in some of their models. Do they offer a hybrid :D

My sisters friend has one of them genesis's and I love it, do you have the 5.0? I took one for a ride and it was a blast {430 hp rwd}, and very affordable, I can't believe they can build a car like that for that little cost...

I didn't opt for the R-Spec, but got a loaded model otherwise. More than just the engine to like: Multi-link suspension, front and back; 8-speed transmission; full steel and aluminum chassis; Lexicon sound system; etc. If someone told me a decade ago that Hyundai would be capable of making such a refined product, I would never have believed it.

It takes money to make money, remember how honda started making autos for the us, the n600 lol, but it took them aa lot longer than 20 years to start mass importing higher end vehicles..

The little Lexus Hybrid car as well as the Acura ILX Hybrid driver pretty poorly for their asking price. IMO they are NOT worth the gas savings. I did have a Volkswagen Jetta TDI Diesel Sportswagen that averaged 40MPG and drove better than the Acura and Lexus Hybrids but Diesel fuel is pricey and the interior space was a bit too small for family driving. Most Hybrids aren't worth the premium IMO.

If you're going to spend this much, get something with decent fuel economy but a great driving experience. I just picked up a 2014 Lexus IS350F. Nice ride.

If you want better fuel economy, lease an A4 or 328i but the lease payment will be roughly $60/mo more than the Lexus and thus the gas savings go out the window at that point.
Oh cool, a 10 year old car with this guys face....

Did you test out a TLX? It is priced WELL below the options above, and its proving to be a great ride. Fuel Economy is better (and achievable), more room, more standard features, and better driveline (won't blow up).

I drove the TLX V6 last week and it was quite impressive. P-AWS works flawlessly, never lets on to it's presence except for the times when you wish you had 4WS (lane change). I have yet to try the 2.4 liter with the 8 speed DCT, but literally every review has said it's the best DCT on the market, and it's the fun sporty car. The V6 and the ZF 9 speed are slower at gear changes but eat up the hwy.

My car has a ZF DCT, good stuff.

I always found Lexus to be painfully slow in the luxury lines (I haven't driven their sportier ones). I drove a friends 2013 ES350 and wanted to get out and push it was so slow. And there is a SLOWER one (the 250).

And passing on the highway...jesus. I'd have to floor it. I remember thinking "This car is so slow its dangerous" lol.

Really turned me off Lexus. I /rarely/ ***** about a luxury cars power (usually they're just fine for the purpose), but, this was ridiculous.

Not like it was cheap either.

I think we are getting spoiled with power.. 4dr sedans are now 270hp-450hp... a few years ago 250 would have been unheard of...

It's more about power to weight ratio and gearing. The gearing to achieve these high MPG numbers makes the cars into bigger dogs. I just looked it up, the ES I drove is 270hp with a curb weight of over 3,500-lbs. And, that's the sportier model on that line.

But, I may very well be a minority in terms of my performance standards.

See with me if I buy a 4 door "luxury-ish" vehicle {sedan, leather, roof, pwr everything, and leg room} I don't care how fast it is, as long as it goes and gets decent mpg, since most likely it will be used for long trips...

I have fast vehicles and have owned some of the fastest in the world, I still have my Hayabusa in the garage {I have to get rid of it someday, I haven't driven it in 3 years}, that weighs 513lbs and has 490hp, I put 39K miles on the first engine and then 16K on the second, I used to drive that every single day it was over 65 degrees and not raining, so I am immune to speed now, everything feels slow... With a weight to hp ratio of almost 1-1 I don't think you can get much faster than that, first gear spun to around 105 mph!!!

But that bike ruined me for all cars, I just can't get a car fast enough, I am on the fence about building a ctsv before they stop production, I have all the paperwork to send it to Lingenfelter, I have all the prices and spec sheets for the suspension, wheels, brakes, from the Speed Shoppe. I could have the car pushing just under 650hp 4dr 6 spd, but just can not talk my self into pulling the trigger... I can't convince my self I will use it enough to justify it, I am always in my truck and I have so many registered vehicles to pay taxes and insurance on another one I don't use is silly...

I don't know...

Anyway my wife is taking her new car out tomorrow for the first time by herself, actually first time she is leaving the house with out me in a while, she has been doing really well so she wants to go to the salon and get lunch with her sisters on her own, the car has been sitting there untouched since the night we got it here so I hope it starts, lol...

I am surprised with how that car takes off I expected it to be worse than the prius but that thing scoots rite along, I found it funny that if you hold it to the floor the mpg only goes down to around 17-19 lol, if I just take off normal in my truck the monitor shows 0-1mpg, LOL... We only drove her car home and to dinner one night and the average {it tells you on a little screen next to the speedo} was 48mpg... Like most toyotas that is better than the sticker, the kid at the dealership said he demo'd one for 2 weeks and he averaged 46mpg, so thta is all I care about, she drives a lot, and she cares about using a lot of fuel so it will keep her happy... She could care less about speed performance, she doesn't go over 5mph over the speed limit, and she is always on time, never running late because she is a "planner", she knows exactly when to leave, how much extra time in case of traffic, ect, If she ins't at an appt. 8 minutes early something went wrong...

Nod. I think your more typical than atypical.

I'm also used to driving sports cars, or at least sporty sedans, so when I get into that sector I'm way outside of what the intended demographic is.

I drive a sports car every day. But I live in Florida, so, makes it easy to do.

I have a truck also, but, I only use it occasionally or if there is some severe weather.

Not sure what I'd do in your position.

I also know that after I dump 20K into the cts-v its never going to be worth that much. I try not to do that, my hayabusa is the perfect example, the bike is worth $8K and I spent $45K building it, took a brand new bike, ripped it apart from top to bottom, sent the engine out, full turbo build, changed swing arm and tire size, changed almost everything rite down to the ecm... But I got my moneys worth with that, I out 50K miles on that bike, and had a lot of fun... Heres a picture of it sitting in my garage now, just getting worth less and less, its all the way to the back on the left, white bike.. Buried by the lawn mower and all my other projects... I have 7 motorcycles, I am going to sell a few today...

The IS250 is piss slow, the IS350 is totally adequate and the IS F is hella fun. The IS250 is also having big BIG carbon problems now due to the DI.

The TLX 8 Speed DCT is not a ZF sourced unit, it's an in house Honda Developed unit, and every review I've seen (10 +) says it's the best DCT on the market. The 9 Speed Automatic (planetary setup) is a ZF unit, similar to the Jeep unit but with Acura's mapping and ECU.

The TLX would be the best choice if you want a Luxury car that is light on the wallet at the pump. The 4 Cyl version is very good on gas, but has the awesome DCT trans that makes it really fun to drive (think TSX but better Luxury feel). The V6 FWD gives you the highway cruiser that can eat up miles without being hard on the wallet either (only 1mpg worse then the 4 cyl on the hwy). The Sh-AWD version is for those who want the best balance and handling, and all year round traction. It does knock a coupel more MPGs off the hwy rating versus the non SH-AWD V6 model though (still respectable). They are prices VERY well too, starting around $32,*** I think in the US.
