On this day in 1933, the 21st amendment was passed. This cancelled out the 18th amendment that caused the start of prohobition!

So. On with the Party! Let's raise a toast, well, because we can! :D

Prohibition undoubtably seemed like a well-meaning idea to those who proposed it. In practice, however, it turned out to be a total disaster. Not only did it completely backfire by increasing the amount of drinking (especially binge drinking), but it allowed organized crime to reach an unprecedented level of power.

Seems to me that there is a lesson here relevant to the current "drug war"!:eek:

Well yes, but I don't see things changing any time soon. The 'Drug War' is a popular method to win votes it seems, as most Americans are completely ignorant of the real issue and assume any 'War on Drugs' is a positive thing.

Nod. And the drug that accounts for the most arrests has zero recorded deaths, whereas alcohol has a toxic:effective-dose ratio of roughly 10 (which is worse than cocaine).

Prohibition has done nothing but criminalize a health issue.

And tobacco... legal... and the amount of deaths in the US is estimated to be near 1/2 million per year....

Now, I'll be clear.. I'm not for banning of ANYTHING. If you agree the US is supposed to be a free country - then a responsible adult has the right to use anything they want - even cigarettes - regardless of consequence. It's THEIR choice. I just find it odd that drugs that are NOT harmful anywhere near legal ones are banned.... so one certainly can not put a valid claim on 'for safety' that specific drugs are banned.

Hehehe, I learned of this last night. My friend insisted we have a shot at 9pm, as that is the 21st hour of the day. He asked, "So, what do you want?". I replied, "Oh, whatever you are having . . .".

My mistake! It was Zwack/Unicum! :eek::p
 
I'm raising a toast right now. Okay, I'm typing right now, but I was drinking before this...and I'll be drinking right after. :D
