He's also an electrical engineer with a lot more years of experience in room correction and EQ than I am.

The only thing I can go on is my ears. I have been a fan of the old school Infinity's and Legacy meets and surpasses that sound for me. A friend of mine has owned various Legacy's and with each upgrade up to the Focus SE my speaker envy has grown. I found a used pair of Focus SE's and leaped. Now I find myself working backwards and trying to build a system to the speakers. I currently have them placed in a room that is an acoustical mess and running them on an anemic Marantz 7055 amp. and processed by a Marantz Cinema 60. I have not done any room correction because the goal is to convert a room to an audio room. (empty nester finally). Needless to say my system is not the same as my buddies because of the enviorment and equipment. All of his equipment is McCintosh and even used that would be out of my budget. So any suggestions on how to maximize my sound going forward would be appreciated!!!! My current use and intent is a lot of streaming. Along with the Focus SE I have a pair of Legacy floor standing Expressions and a Rythmyk 15 Subwoofer. I bought it all as a bundle. No regrets I'm just trying to get the most out of them.

Click to expand... Many people would be happy with Legacy speakers. Congrats. You don’t need McIntosh or any expensive brands of amps and AVP for your system to sound great. A lot of times we buy things for other reasons besides sound quality- like aesthetics, features, pride of ownership. 100% of my contents are streaming from my network. Last edited: May 10, 2023

I don't know how properly I expressed my lack of knowledge but basically I am jumping into the ocean with no life jacket and not knowing how to swim. Currently I am set up and running the basics. To my Marantz Cinema 60 (5ch 125W/ch receiver/processor) That is connected to a Marantz 7055 Amp. (5ch 140W/ch) via the preouts. I have audio to the speakers from a connected cable box, computer, and a bluetooth connection from my phone streaming Apple Itunes. My main goal is achieved. Now comes the hard part learning the Audiophile way. As far as primary use, audio will be my main purpose. that is why I chose the 5.1 surround as apposed to larger theater set ups. 5 channel will be all I want for that. The speakers connected are the Large focus fronts Expression Rears and a Rythmik Fvx15 Sub. (center speaker to be named later). My first next step is to dial in the sub. I am desperately seeking advice on the best way to do this. I kind of get the correlation between a kick drum bass sound and a bass sound of a bass guitar. What i am trying to understand is how the two interact in a sub? I am trying to define the hit of a drum sharply and keep the reverberation of a bass guitar. I.m either getting not enough lows or too much reverb. If anyone could point me to a place to understand the set up of subs that would be great. My second task will be to figure out the Xilica XP-4080 Processor. After watching a bunch of Youtube tutorials my brain has glazed over. While the Marantz Cinema 60 is a processor of sorts as I understand it, but correct me if I'm wrong but isn't a DSP similar in function to an old school equalizer? Should I be leaving the EQ settings in the Cinema 60 as flat and make my adjustments at the DSP and subwoofer settings? Do I need to consider DAC? The processor is not even hooked up yet. Just get something on Amazon with good ratings. Won’t hear any difference. DAC - you don’t need any stinking DAC because the Marantz already has an excellent DAC. Won’t hear any difference between one good DAC vs. another. EQ- have to play around. A lot of people don’t use any Room EQ and just EQ the subs. Huge complex subject that requires its own thread. Being ear level to the tweeters really helped so I ended up adjusting the feet on the speaker to make sure the tweeters were beaming right at me. ( they had been aimed bit high) Anyway that really improved the sound for me. Every now and then I get the itch for the Aeris model
Have owned focus SE's for 5 years or so and am very happy. One thing I noticed is that the tweeters seemed very sensitive to vertical dispersion. After taking your advice to heart I played with the EQ. I found that in my desire for clear vocals I boosted the mid ranges too high. Unlike any other speaker I’ve owned, I did not know how dominant the mid ranges on the legacy could be. A slight adjustment down and the lows and highs came to life. Especially at low volume and then the sub did its job.

I am thinking about getting two of their Foundation subs for the front of my theater.
