I wish i could take the credit for that bad hombre,he belongs to a member of a growers forum that i belong to,neither me or my wife has ever had any luck with Orchids, the PH balance has to be 100% perfect at all times with Orchids, one percent twords acidic soil or alkaline soil & they die overnight, indoor Orchid cultivation is for people with a lot of time (several hours) every day to spend in their garden.

Does anybody really take growing with lights serious anymore..... I grow some of the hottest peppers in state of north dakota with indoor lighting, and have been interested in switching to LED lights too, just not a lot of information available as none of the systems have been effectively tested yet. I still doubt the efficacy as a lighting source due to lumen to watts output, you would need a VERY LARGE dc power source to run the LED's properly without shortening their life span. If I do find any credible reference material I will surely post it for those that are serious in legal plant cultivation.
Well my verdicts in,LED's in no way can replace HPS or MH lighting, the lumen's are nowhere near where they need to be for healthy steady growth,i will still use the LED for spectrum reinforcement because i allready bougfht the light but i'll never use it on its own again.

For the comparison i took 6 clones & ran the LED with 3 clones & the MH system with the other 3 clones, all clones were treated with growth hormone at the time of cloning.

The 3 under the MH system established strong root sytstems & are still growing strong ,the 3 that were under the LED started looking weak right off the bat,the leaves developed yellow spots that made me think they were being eaten by aphids or out of nutrients, over a 5 day period the 3 LED clones became so sickly that i pulled them.

Dont waste your money on LED systems, they are bunk.

HH,

I don't know about your part of the country, but down here red flags pop all over when someone buys hydroponics gear, and FPL monitors excessive power usage in residential areas. Many, many pot busts have happened here from people using hydroponics to grow weed. The last case I saw they converted a high-end home (3000 K square feet) wholly into a pot farm.

My mom is an expert orchid grower, splices and dices them, has all kinds of weird, show class plants, also heavy into ferns...Australian, Staghorns of every kind, our weather down here is perfect for her hobby.

BTW, Vanilla comes from the beans of an orchid.

That was the funniest thing I have seen in a long time - thank you for the great laugh sir.
Sure Andy,

I'd hate to be her Gyn. I'd need Kevlar gloves or maybe the stainless steel mesh ones they use with shark suits.

Ferns are what my wife really likes, she has a staghorn that knock's everybodies socks off the first time they see it,your weather is perfect for Fern's,they crave high humidity levels,we have to keep the humidity at a steady 60% or her plants suffer & start to brown,Ferns are a hard plat to keep alive long term, they take in most of what they need through their leaves with very little watering of the soil,we just added a co2 delievery system to her room about 6 months ago, what a difference that made in leaf color.

Is your mom using a co2 supply system or any kind of chemical reaction co2 in her room ?

No, they're all outside away from the sun, they're very green, one of her Austrialian ferns is about 8-9 feet tall, her largest Staghorn weighs in excess of 200-250 pounds and it's chained to a mango tree. Her Staghorn collection has to be in the hundreds, everytime I visit her its something new added. She's got orchids of all colors growing on trees, she ties them when their young, the roots grab onto the tree and presto you have an orchid growing on a palm or an oak, quite beautiful.

Rick she's gotta have something, either the orchid or a piece of PVC.

P.S. Go back and take a good look at that orchid.

I allready poked my own eyes out:eek:,thanks Strat(insert feirce & violent vomiting here:mad:)the mental image of Rosie's mud pit has caused me to take a hot poker to my eyes,to ensure that i never look upon anything that horrid again.

What was the name of the group of religious fanatics that would whip their self to pay for their sins?

On a related note, the new brail keyboard is working out just fine:D

You ever heard of a hot tap? You tap into the power on the other side of the meter ... in the middle of the night ... very carefully. The guy who told me about it was on parole for 5 years after doing 5 years. He got caught because of something else. He said that he lived like a king for the 5 years before all that.

They would get caught when the power co. pulled the meter; and
everything electrical in the house would still be running.:D

I've seen it done with relays, or a contactor.
It cuts off the hot tap, when the meter is pulled.

I was going to mention relays as I thought that that part of your post was a sig and I didn't read it till I got to the quote part. So you've "seen" this ..... I see...

You should have matched the lumen's, and done a fair comparison before you say an entire technology is bunk. Granted LED lighting is still in it's infancy, but it is the future of lighting.

There are many factors in play here. I recently spent some time in a local grow shop looking for lighting to use on solar panels. Our test was simple, we measured the short circuit current on a 50W solar panel held as close to each type of lighting they had while maintaining full illumination of the panel.

To my amazement a 250W hight output florescent fixture out performed a 1000W metal halide. If you are interested I can explain why. But I would not say metal halide lighting systems are bunk. ;)
