I need advice on a 55" LCD or something similar under 4-5k max. Was looking at the Sony 55"LCD for 3700. Thanks

not sony

Anything flat from sony is made by samsung. 55"? Why not get a plasma? You'll get more brightness and better viewing angles. If you are stuck on LCD for whatever budgetary or position reasons. Don't buy a Sony if its flat. There may be some slight different parts in the sony compared to a stock samsung, but the price you pay for the sony name may not be worth it. I'll do a little more research, but that's just my opinion.

The Sony rear-projection LCDs are some of the best looking displays I have seen. Very comparable to any DLP and very bright and vibrant colors with good shadows. I would recommend it, but I don't own one, so I won't go that far.

Do a search, I think others have had some praise for the new Sonys as well.

I'll second this. I have a Sony 42 inch rear-projection LCD (Grand Wega) and it has an absolutely stunning picture with an HDMI input, and easy to work yet still very customizable. there's virtually no glare, which is the main reason I chose it over a similarly-priced 46 inch Samsung DLP (size isn't everything). :) I had not heard it was repackaged from Samsung, but it does work very well with a Samsung HD 941 dvd player.

as far as why not buy plasma, the whole throw it away in six years kinda puts a damper on that. :(

Actually - the poster above (Jazzwyld) didn't look at the budget 5 grand still doesn't buy a plasma over 50 inches as far as I know.

Also - 60,000 hours for most plasmas to reach HALF their original brightness. If you watch 30 hours of TV a week, that's 1,500(ish) hours a year - or about TWENTY years of life until the plasma is half as bright! Double it and you are still talking ten years of use before half bright.

Plenty of other reasons not to buy a plasma though.

Thanks everybody for your help. Wasn't aware that plasmas had problems. I'll see what I can learn about the Sony and Samsung relationship.

I think Sony may use Samsung glass in it's LCD panels - not the case with the rear projection LCD microdisplays like you are looking at.

There really aren't major issues with plasma - but burn-in, a hefty price, and false contouring (looks like dithering) are a little annoying. DLP can have rainbow effects, LCD can have problemed shadow areas, and the good ol' three gun CRT has burn in issues, deep cabinet, heavy, needs to be tweaked regularly...

Everything has issues when you get right down to it, so buy what is best for your situation.

For me - I got a 50" plasma on the wall, then a 106" screen comes down in front of it with an LCD projector (front) for night time movie watching. It's a fun setup that didn't cost me an arm and a leg... but still a lot more than many will pay.

Samsung and Sony are in a joint venture to build large LCD panels. Their new plant in S. Korea should be online within the next couple of months if it didn't just open. Samsung has been supplying Sony with some panels for a few years. Samsung is the largest producer of LCD panels in the world, followed by the joint venture of LG/Phillips in S. Korea and then AU Optronics in Taiwan. Between the three they supply the bulk of LCD panels in use, especially the larger ones. Chances are if the panel is over 20" in size it was manufactured by one of the three mentioned. But that doesn't mean the manufacturers of the TV's aren't each doing something different with the underlying electronics.

Check out the Hitachi LCD's. I looked at the Sony and the Hitachi side by side and took the Hitachi home.

Go with a SONY for LCD

Definitely go with the SONY for an LCD projection TV. If you're thinking of DLP, then I would look at Samsung. However, whenever I go to showrooms or electronic stores, the SONY and Panasonic LCD projection TVs definitely show the best, sharpest, and brightest pictures. In my opinion, they look way better than Plasmas. Of course, anybody with a Plasma will not agree with you but, understand they have a hefty investment to protect. Go see for yourself on this. The major advantage Plasmas provide are deeper black levels and greater viewing angles. However, everyone that I've seen, even the $9K HD displays show very visible pixels. The gaps between the pixels are either too wide or too dark and that does two things, it takes away from the brightness of the screen, and it gives you that really annoying jagged edge on images showing straight lines at an angle... something that really bothers me, but maybe not others. Also, even if Plasmas last as long as they say they do, most have still not overcome the problem of burn-in, something that I find is completely unacceptable, never mind for a premium-priced product. And if it does dim or go out, you can only get it repaired or throw it away... LCD or DLP, just replace the lamp!
If money were a problem, I would go for the Panasonic LCDs, definitely best bang for the buck, though users have complained about bulbs bursting early. I'm not a big fan of SONY except that in some cases they design things nicely. But I will say that their LCD projection TVs are definitely impressive. I'm getting one myself in a couple of months. I looked at the 55" KDF-55XS955. It has two HDMI ports in place of one on the 655 (about the only major difference in terms of features). However the 955 looks noticeably better than the 655, just go to a store to see the difference, you'll see what I mean.

You might want to check out the JVC HD-ILA sets. They look great with HD and better than most with SD. Here soon, if not already they will be releasing a 70" model. The LCOS technology does a nice job of reducing the screen door effect.
