Well, I'm seeing NYC turning into a sh'thole where DeBlasio isn't targeting anybody. That is unless he's going to be there for a photo-op and then he clears the streets.

Not sure how that plays into this discussion. Google "New York City crime rates" and find articles saying both it's good and bad, better and worse, and arguments supporting both sides.

As for the clock/bomb, it's sad the school even found it necessary to call the police. But once they did, I agree the parents should have been immediately notified and given every opportunity to attend questioning by the police. At this point it was already determined the clock was just a clock.

Boys will be boys, and have played w/ toy guns every since there were guns. Also swords, knives, army men, fighter planes, etc. To me, it is much easier to separate harmless play from activity indicating concern, than the current media seems to think. It goes back to the media, (including talkshows and pundits), fabricating issues for money. For whatever reason, I guess it was the school's judgement this incident was an activity indicating concern.

But to use this issue to indict the police as a whole, or call for stings to cleanup law enforcement, is unworthy of an intelligent and analytic person. And for politicians to capitalize on this issue, ignoring the host of more prevalent concerns, is divisive and detestable.

1000's of times a day in this country people are pulled over and LEO's ask to search either their person, car, or both. When the person resists cops tell them you shouldn't be worried if you have nothing to hide. Sauce that tastes good on goose tastes equally good on gander.

My single issue, and Chu is mistaken in this regard, is that when questioning a minor parents are to be notified and if the child asks for their parents (which he did) the questioning didn't stop (which it should have). That is a clear cut civil rights violation.

I've had in my time on earth had 6 interactions with law enforcement. 4 were B.S. and two I paid the citation because I was at fault. All 4 were stops without cause with the last one ending with me flipping the LEO the bird. My experience is not a granular event.

Body cams on cops, that they can't tamper with, will correct much of this.

I'm also a firm believer if it would have been a Caucasian child this wouldn't be in the news.

Your comment holds a clue as to which camp you're in, and in my opinion why your experiences were not pleasant. I reside comfortably in the other camp, and have never had an unpleasant experience.

You've never had a cop walk over 50 feet at a gas station (Sheetz) where there are 4 other cars filling up and tell you he smelled marijuana. Funny as I was the only out of state plated vehicle.

When I told him that I wasn't going to consent to a search, that he had to have a reasonable, articulated, suspicion that I was either in the act of or had just committed a crime. I let him know there are security cameras that show that he walked all the way across the lot and how could he smell something that far away and know out of 5 vehicles that it was ME. I told him if he wanted to call a K9 unit to try for cause he was more than welcome to but I would record the entire search.

He tried to give a bit more crap, I gave him the finger, got in my truck, started the phone video recorder and left. That was 2011.

No, you're right. But perhaps I was in one of the other 4 vehicles, along with his doctor, pastor and mother. And perhaps you fit the description of a known criminal in that morning's briefing. You never know. My default position is to give LEOs the benefit of the doubt rather than suspecting nefarious intent. It is not relinquishing freedom. It is common courtesy.

I wasn't speaking to crime rather remarking in response to your targeting comment. NYC is a grungier place with more vagrants, public urination, public nudity largely I think because there hasn't been targeting. We may be in more agreement than it seems.

Yes it is sad but according to existing policy that's what ought to have been done. AFAIK, the police did expend the effort to contact the boy's parents but they were under no legal obligation to suspend any questioning until they arrived. By the same token he could have declined to answer until they appeared. Unfortunately I haven't seen a timeline of this whole matter and I'm hopeful that and actual recordings will eventually find their way into the public record.

I have no problem with recording the actions of the police and support the implementation of body cameras. There have been instances where the recording equipment in police cruisers have caught police doing despicable things just as it has found them doing their job professionally and the people lying. I want good cops.

Good cops! Psh! Sometimes it takes a bad cop to catch a bad guy! Haven't you ever seen The Shield? You can't expect the boys in blue to be able to do their job with their hands tied behind their backs thanks to some spineless bureaucrats down at city hall! What do those pencil-necks know about life in the streets when they can float neatly above the fray in their Lincoln Park condos! It's a war zone out here, kid, and you are fooling yourself if you think that following "due process" is going to keep you and your family safe from the thugs who rule the streets! I hate to shatter that perfectly immaculate bubble you live in, sunshine, but we need cops who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty if we don't want this city to burn itself to the ground!

Ahmed went to the Google science fair where many people wanted to snap picture of and with him. Seems he was quite the celebrity.

He went without his clock which I believe is still being held by the Irvington Police Department. Quite the pity for the young inventor who aspires to go to MIT one day as a student.

I've also read the Mohamed family has repeatedly declined to meet with city officials. They are also declining permission for the release of any records by the school and PD to the public. Allegedly death threats have been received by the school.

In the specific link markw provided, it states that the family has not met with officials, they're not allowed to release matters pertaining to clock-gate without parental consent which has not been given, and there have been death threats. Because it came from a conservative website you're pretty sure this has all been made up even though there is video of the mayor saying as much. If what was written was a fabrication, don't you think the liberal media would have pounced on this?
