It has something of an agressive look about it...either it's going to jump out from beside the couch, or else fire torpedoes out of those ports.

Sorry, had to get my post count up first! Does this qualify as proof? (yes, my camera sucks).
Mmmmm, nice looking sub.
I think Mike owes an apology.:p

Even though it is a nice sub, I agree with mfabien, on the down firing subs.
I wish HSU would not have did the side firing thing. (although, I am contemplating a upgrade)

That is one good looking sub! At what approximate dB level did it bottom it out? And no, I'm not a guerilla marketer. One of the contests finally got me to spend the 30 seconds on getting an account :)
Well, I didn't have an SPL meter, but I had the gain up WAY too high. It bottomed out on some really really low bass, I believe, so unsure about SPL levels as there wasn't a lot of bass to hear at those frequencies. There is currently a bass "hole" or weak spot at my listening position (and nowhere else, haha), so that didn't help either. I haven't had any time to mess with it since then, and I still need to pick up an SPL meter and order a calibration disc. I'll probably mess with it more this weekend. Oh, and my hearing is intact! I mentioned that I'm used to my car sub's bass (JL Audio 13w7) and was expecting too much in a large open room (12' x 15', opening to a kitchen and entryway with no separating wall, opening to stairs and a second floor). It is still very nice bass, though, and will be much better once I get it calibrated.

I also registered on this forum for the exact same reason you mentioned! :D

I'll take some pics tonight and post. I absolutely *LOVE* my Emotivas and Axioms! I got the Axioms back in January 2006 and got the Emotivas just a few months ago. I was using a 10-year-old Teac AG-V8520 Dolby Surround receiver before then that I got back in college used off of eBay. I had some huge KLH tower speakers (also off eBay in the same auction) for the fronts and a KLH Platinum Series center channel (yep, eBay too, later on). Anyway, it's wonderful having speakers that are so clear and a modern receiver (no complaints on the Teac, but it was analog audio only, and just Dolby Surround). The speakers made a HUGE difference in my setup and the receiver and amp were a noticeable improvement over the Teac. Once I get the surrounds, I'll be looking at room treatments and that should be about it!

and you knew he was legit from the get go? :p

I prefer front firing because most of what you paid for in a sub is the driver, I want to see it work! I also came from car subs, and you miss the part when you see the car subs in show-off mode pump in and out, and that psychologically sends a signal to people watching ... look lots of bass!

Sorry, I guess it is just me. I don't assume someone is spamming from a first post like that.
LOL, I am not the one checking peoples integrity from post count.

Anyhow, back to the OP.
I'm actually surprised the sub bottomed out?????
I have not checked the specs on the recent SVS subs, considering (bashful) I am a HSU fan.

I am seriously thinking of an upgrade to replace my somewhat aging VTF3-MK2.
(granted, it does work fine for my needs, just I got the upgrade bug)

Well, not sure on the same exact SVS as in this thread, but they are surely on the top of my list.:)
Go for it or you will always wonder if you should have. Just get it now and never wonder. :D

Yeah, no apology necessary, as I understand and agree with your initial reasoning, hehe. I also am in agreement on the front-firing design and love to see the woofer in action, especially with the new grill, instead of a traditional cloth grill you can't see through. Figuring out how to build a clear protective shield onto my car sub box was difficult for me, given the extreme excursion of the sub, as I needed the shield to be very very well braced, able to take the pressure, and far enough away from the woofer to prevent it from hitting the shield. I wanted a clear shield, though, as the more traditional metal/plastic shields are just ugly in comparison to that beautiful sub. I ended up using lucite for the job and cutting a JL logo into it (omg, it sucks trying to cut a design into lucite!). Anyway, I got a passion for bass from car audio with my first sub (a Kicker CompVR 12") and it's carried over into home audio.

Yeah right. You must be new to this hobby. ;)
Sorry, I mean that's it *for the short term*. That's all I have *planned* right now, but yeah, there will be more eventually, I'm sure. :D

I still need to get my MediaPortal TV server fully set up, for example, for my MediaPortal HTPC to use. I also need to upgrade to a better Dish Network receiver, but I'm not sure about the value of current HD programming on there (for me, at least). And there's the Xbox 360 I need to get, too! Plus, I still need to revisit the design of my MX850 remote's menus and move to an activity-based approach. So yeah, there's more to do, for sure, but not really any other major purchases at this point until the new Emotiva stuff is released some time next year (I hope).

Damn, I want to see a SVS sub bottoming out. Please make a video soon. Also, I wonder how is your ears after seeing the SVS bottoming out. We all know that SVS are known for insanely high price/performance ratio and VOLUME. SVS subwoofers are known for VOLUME man. How the hell did you bottom it out. It must be a like 120dB when it bottoms out. Tell us what the SPL meter reads when you bottom it out after you get your SPL meter. Again, we want to see that sick excursion.
