well, i purchased a yamaha htr-5560 on ebay for a great price. and the seller had good ratings. and recieved it last week. just kept resetting. so after a week of emails, he finally decided he wasnt going to refund me. its not like its my first time setting up a reciever, but he insisted that the reciever worked when he shipped it. so now i may be outta luck (but going through the appropriate channels in attempt for a refund). as a college kid w/ an apt, the $180 i spent is quite a bit of money outta my pocket. and its great when i have nothing but a paperweight to show for it.

thats my vent....

have you tried to power up the unit with nothing hooked up to it? There have been more than one post here about spkr connections with a strand of wire touching causing the unit to shut down/overload/etc? Just a thought.

trust me, that was one of the first things i did when i pulled it outta the box. as a starting point before i hooked all the system together. but thanks. trust me, this was the first place i searched hi and low for ideas on troubleshooting or if anyone else had similar issues.

There was your problem. Good ratings are actually the sign of a problem vendor.

Seriously.

The goal is actually to have a large number of negative posts. Nobody is perfect, and with that in mind, the problems that prior customers have had, and how those problems were handled is more meaningful than an excellent track record.

No negative posts, means the vendor gets none of my money.

Here is an idea for you that I would do for sure... I would find a store like Best Buy or Curcuit City, or for me future shop since it is in Canada and buy the exact same receiver for full price. Then bring it home, open the box and put the broken receiver in it. Go back to the store in the morning and bring back the busted unit saying you want a refund because the unit did not work upon arrival and you found another product you want at another store...

With there 30 day no questions asked warranty it would be no problem. I have done it myself at future shop with rear speakers that I broke and had no warranty to cover. It took about 15 mins of my time.

Hope this helps,
MAX...

I certainly don't like to see a large amount of negative feedbacks. Or at least not a high percentage. Sure, you expect a few bad ones just because not everyone can be pleased. But in my experience, higher than 1.5% to 2% shows the seller is lazy or careless in shipping/package, etc.

More telling to me is how he treats negative feedback- if every single person who gave him a bad feedback recieved negative feedback in retalitation, then that is not a person I'll ever buy from (same if he's a buyer). Retaliation shows a vindictive and petty person. Better to say "yeah, I messed up- here's how I tried to make it right."

Always look not only at their feeback received, but also given!

I think that you may have a good chance with paypal. I've been able to get the refund through them before when I didn't receive an item from Ebay.

Trust me, if your stores in the states are anything like future shop here, some other poor schmuck wont get stuck with it! they will send it back to yamaha for credit...

one of my best friends has worked for future shop for years, he always tells me not to buy the extended warranty and if there is a problem with whatever I bought after the 30 day return period, come back and buy the same thing and then switch it. It's not about ethics, it's about trying to help a poor college kid trying to get a receiver that works...

thanks for the idea, but a couple of things:

1. in this current situation, i'm staying as much on the "up and up" until things are resolved. no need to make my case more difficult.

2. this reciever is a couple years old (hence the nice price), so it wouldnt work.

MAX,
...and when the serial numbers on the box and the unit don't match? No, your "logic" is simply unethical. That's like saying that since someone needs a car they can use yours, wether you know about it or not.

you forget, you dont even need the box to be able to return an item. Only the receipt...

You can say I am unethical, but the fact is it has worked for me.

SQ Kid I didn't realize we were not talking about the current line up, Sorry for your loss if this matter does not get resolved. I was just trying to give you options.

I'd look for a better option than merely stealing one from another store. You my dislike BB or CC, but they had nothing to do with the bad Ebay purchase. To try to stiff them with merchandise you bought elsewhere is illegal and immoral, and likely to blow up in your face.

not necessarily.

I work at best buy, return policy is 30 days, they typically dont argue.
They'll eventually get it back without a box and parts, and it'll end up laying around like a lot of crap does.

I,E. sony HtiB that is missing its proprietary cabling. lol

We sell it every week, and every week it comes back, its like a game.
I even disclose that they need the wiring from sony.

once again, i myself am against any unethical practices, especially in this matter because it would deffinately damage my character in respect to what may come with my cases with eBay and PayPal. i did order another reciever (a pioneer vsx-d811s), which i guess is an upgrade from the yammy (at least feature-wise), but it still would have been nice to have gotten a working one the first time around.

i'll be updating as i get more info.

thanks for everyone's support and help thus far

Just because one "can" do something does not make it the right thing. A crime of opportunity is still a crime even if you don't get caught.

After all, we all have to look at ourselves in the in the mirror every morning and it's a lot easier when you know you've done the right thing. ...even if nobody else ever knows.

Go ahead and try.

Just a hint of the problem that you will incur if you get caught.

First, most manufacturers record the SN of the units sold to a vendor, such as CC. The vendor, if they have a clue about they are doing, will record the SN's from the manufacturers.

Therefore, a sales clerk can activate the vendors computer system and verify that the SN is in their system.

Should the clerk have a clue what he/she is doing, and is responsible to the company, you are looking at 5 to 10 at the your friendly local prison.

By the way, CC check the SN of a $9 clock radio that I returned.
