Since for some reason we have been bitten by the audio bug lately {probably since lawn season is almost over and the money is burning a hole in our pockets...} My brother wanted to put together a decent 2.1 music system in his bonus room over his garage...
So about a month ago a friend of mine that owns a pawn shop called me and said he had a big heavy amp still in the package he just got in.. I go look at it, and its a Monster 3250, it has to weigh 110lbs, 3 X 250w, its a beast... It is obviously brand new, so he wanted $500 I got it for $300 {$50 more than he paid}... Come to find out this amp was pretty expensive new... When he decided to build this system of course he wanted the amp, so I sold it to him..
He then bought a pair of brand new Salk Song towers {he figured he got the amp so cheap why not} He wouldnt tell me what he paid but I bet it was around $2500, they are black ones..
For a sub his friend had a Jamo 660 that they took the electronics out of but it is like brand new, just no amp or xovers just a box with the driver in it, he paid $50 for it....
So he has an ipod dock {like a dj mixer type} and since all his music is on his ipad and phone {I dont think he ever owned a cd, hes only 22}, he wanted to use this as his source.
We took the stereo output from his dock and split the left one to the sub {using the 3rd channel of the amp}, with a low pass f mod, then the speakers he used a high pass fmod on the left and right.. It sounds really good, super loud and very clear...
I was thinking he had to buy a preamp but it sounds pretty good how he has it.. Although I think if his Ipod dock didnt have the built in EQ there would be no way to turn down the subwoofer..... Because the 3 channel amp is getting the same signal strength to all 3 so it would just be a bunch of bass, but he turns it down with his dock and it sounds good...
Anyway I thought I would share, I would love to get them Song towers over to my house to see what they do an a real system, they sound really good going through that cheap Ipod dock, so I could imagine going through a DAC...
