Hi all,
I am new to this forum and I am writing you because I am in the process of buying a pair of floor speakers and my choice is now focused between JM LABS ELECTRA 927 BE and REVEL F32.

As I don`t know what to choose, dose anyone have any clue?

Thanks in advance.

Stefano

Electra 927

I have just changed my Sonus Faber Guarneri's (cost £5400) for the JM Labs Electra 927be (£2800). I am delighted. With my Naim gear they sound like Quad ESL's with bass. Natural is the keyword. They are also very beautiful to look at and do not impose themselves in my room which is only 13' x 11'6" and also contains a dining room suite. I have not heard the Revels but the Guarneri's are very highly thought of and they are far better then them (in my opinion, of course). I tried several other speakers around this price point and over and I was sold on the Electra within one minute. Everything sounds so 'right'

Uhm, very interesting, because I own a pair of Sonus Concerto now and I wanted to upgrade my system.

What about the bass of the Electra? Are they good?
And, as far as you know, is there much difference between the 927 and the 926 ?

thanks

Hi stefano
The bass is superb. Not overblown but deep and musical. I tried the 926 and 927 and to me it was 'no contest'. The 926 sounded small against the 927. Large orchestras are LARGE and chamber music is intimate - as it should be. Against your Concertos your system will be transformed. There is a 'rightness' about the 927's.

Electra or Revel

Thanks for your reply. :)

I will be listening to the Electra for the last time today and then I will take the final decision.

By the way, which amplifier and player are you using?

Regards,

Stefano

I use the Naim 42/140 and SNAPS with the Theta Pearl and DAC. Apparently the JM Labs are 'voiced' using Naim. The sound isn't the usual forward and bright sound of Naim with this set up.

the revel are much better to my ears

as one who listen to both speakers j m lab electra and the revel,i can honestly say that both are exelend speakers but i found the j m even though they are very plesent to hear, they seem to loose deatails.while the revel have also very plesent to hear but they are more deataild if yoy like lots of deatails in your room...btw after all the tests i made up in my life,i have never enjoyed any listening (music or ht) more then my studio 80 paradigm...

Sorry never heard of the Primaluna. Glad you are going for JM Labs. I couldn't accomodate the 937 - too big for my room but I'll bet they are brilliant. Give them at least 100 hours burning in. As far as the other writer - No I am not a detail freak. I listen to music!!

Jm Labs

Well Primaluna is a valvular amplifier.
The dealer that sold me the JM Labs told me that these speakers sound better with a valve amplifier and primaluna is cheap and very good (http://www.upscaleaudio.com/AH!/PLPLaudioreview.pdf).

I will test and tell you.

Just read a review of the Primaluna. Sounds good. Personally I have had my fill of valve amps. I had a Rogue Tempest - I think 'Rogue' is a good name for it. Trouble, trouble, trouble. I also had a Unison Research Unico. Very good but the Naim sounded better to me (sound is very personal). I also don't like waiting about half an hour before the sound is at its best. Yes the midrange is wonderful but the trade offs are too much for me. I am sure the JM Labs will sound great with anything - they are so even handed. Interconnects have a great bearing also. I tried an Ecosse and a Linn between DAC and amplifier - speakers sounded totally different. I suggest you try different ones as the speakers will tell the truth about source.

jm 927

I have the 927's. I think that they are fantastic. The bass is good for me, but the mids and highs are unreal. The sound just keeps on going. I have a small room so the 937' s would have been too much. They are being powered by a Bryston 4b-ST and a Krell showcase is my preamp. I have not heard the revel so I can not comment on them. These should get you close to the utopia line for a lot less money. If any one is interested they better act soon because they are limited edition speakers. 300 pair for the 927 and 500 pair for the 927. I have no regrets getting these speakers. Even the 926 is a wonderful sounding speaker. I think people really need to consider these speakers when they are doing their research. I also have the SW900. That is a very good subwoofer. People need to go and listen to one of those. Soon I will get the cc901 center to help me finish of the main part of my setup. Any way JM speakers are very good speakers. The time and money they put into development is incredible. Any way people should go check them out. I do not think that anybody will be disappointed.

Primaluna

For those who want to try a valve amplifier, at low cost, no fuss and great sound here's the tip:

Primaluna 2
KT88 valves and auto-bias board.
I replaced the KT88 with 6550C ( because I have 16 of them lying around)

The sound is what you'd expect from twice the money !!!!

Detailed, deep soundstage, good bass.

Enjoy !
