JBL Stadium 8" Floorstanding vs. Klipsch RF15

Hi Guys !

I need some help about the speakers. I have a 58" 1080p plasma, bought an Onkyo 805 (7.1 receiver) and couldn't decide whcih speakers to go with. I think I will go with JBL or Klipsch, my budget for the speakers are around $1000-$1500 total. This system will be used for movies only, so don't want to spend big bucks for the speakers.

My biggest question is if I buy a center speaker which is a totally different family group from the floor spakers, will this effect the sound a lot? As an example, will the JBL LC1 3-Way Dual 5- 1/4-Inch Center speaker match the JBL Stadium 3-Way, Dual 8" Floorstandings?

My 2 options are:

JBL Stadium 3-Way, Dual 8" Floorstanding ($188 x2)
JBL Venue Series SUB12 12-Inch 500-Watt Subwoofer ($229)
JBL LC1 3-Way Dual 5-1/4-Inch ($330) OR JBL Venue 5-Inch 2-Way ($99)
JBL Venue Series Arena 6-Inch 2-Way Speakers Pair ($127 x2)
Around $1000 for 7 .1 system

OR

Klipsch RF15 Floor($250 x2)
Klipsch KSW-10 Sub ($300)
Klipsch RC35 Center ($300)
Klipsch SB2 Surround Pair ($300)
Klipsch SS-1 Surround Pair ($250)
Around $1650 for 7.1 system

Thanks for your help !!!!

Buying speakers that are not designed to tonally match can ruin your surround experience. I would go with something from AV123 over those JBLs. JBLs are not much to write home about. SVSound also has a great HT package. Don't worry about getting bookshelves because a good sub from AV123 or a killer sub from SVS will fill out the bottom end like you have never heard before.

That's a pretty broad generalization. What JBL's and AV123 speakers have you A/B compared?

If the above is your only choice, then go with the Klipsch system. The Venue/Stadium series isn't bad for the money, but with the Klipsch system, you will get a more detailed sound and better dynamics. The Klipsch's are also very effecient requiring less power to play loud, and believe me, they will play loud. The only weak link you might have is the KSW-10 sub. Not very strong. If you can, I would recomend subbing (no pun intended) in an HSU sub.

The is very good advice if they're the OP's only options.

The JBL center you want should have a fine timbre match with the Venue speakers. However, if I were you, I'd try to save a bit more and get a nice set of Studio L series from JBL. They are much superior to the Venues. (Are you wanting this line for its size or looks?) Even the E-series would be superior, IMHO, and is on close-out pricing around the net as it has been discontinued.

And I especially agree with alexsound's advice on a subwoofer. I've had JBL subs and they choke. An Hsu would ultimately make you MUCH happier.

Happy hunting. Whichever way you go, actually getting a new setup is always a wonderful joy!! :)

That is a broad statement as JBL makes some really good speakers.

I would look at the AV123 packages if it were me.

"Tommorrow" brought up a good suggestion on the Studio L series from JBL. I've been seeing them discounted on the web lately. I recently had the opportunity to audition the 890 towers and they sounded amazing. FAR better than the last Studio series towers. As for JBL subs, I would slightly disagree. The Studio series subs are actually pretty strong. Even the last Studio series subs were pretty strong, but fairly expensive vs HSU subs or SVS. I would agree, however, to stay away from the lower priced JBL subs.

You can get the Studio L line for very good prices online. Around $1000 for a 5.0 system with L880 towers, LC1 center, and L830 surrounds. I don't know how much you were thinking of spending on the Stadiums but if they were going to be at that price range you should definitely get the Studio L series.

Edit: I just saw how much you were planning to spend on the Klipsch setup and you can definitely get a complete setup with the Studio L and a HSU or SVS for that price. If you want to know more about the L's I know the place where you can get them for cheap.

Where ? I've seen them cheap, but not that cheap !! Come on, out with it,
I wouldn't mind getting a pair of 880's, but prefer 890's.

Thanks guys !

Thanks guys, I think I will go with JBL. I will definately give it a shot for the HSU subs. I don't have lots of time to shop around and find a JBL dealer around me so thats why I will buy all 7.1 speakers from the web.

Now I will decide between the Studio L series vs Venue Series.

Thanks again for your feedback, I will post my reviews as soon as I get the speakers installed.

Update on L vs Venue for Floor Standing
Studio L880 Studio L Series 4-Way Dual 6" 200-Watts Floor ($499)
vs
STADIUM Venue Series 3-Way, Dual 8" 225 Watts Floor ($190)

The price for L series are x3 of Stadium.

Alexsound....I'd like to agree with you on the subs, because I like JBL equipment. But I've owned the S120PII and it wasn't 1/2 the sub that one of my Hsu VTF3MII's is. And lol, I own the last series of JBL Studios (S-series). It just shows you how subjective speakers are. I love my S312's and S38's.

Now given the choice, I'm all over Aerial Acoustics, but oh....the cash-flow issues......:(

os2009,

Check for the E-series sets at discontinued pricing. They'd be better than the Venue...at perhaps similar pricing.

The S312's and especially the S38's were/are good speakers, definately better than the Venue series, but, like I said, I was really impressed with the 890's. They reminded me of my old L7's. . And dude, come on, 98% of the subs out there aren't 1/2 the sub of........... any HSU sub, but back on track I still think if he only has the 2 choices, he should go with the Klipsch speakers, even if he has to go with the Klipsch sub. I don't know if you've had a chance to hear the Klipsch reference series, but they are amazing sounding speakers in their own right.

I own the 2 JBL 890L and I really love them. The sound is very clear (as far as I can tell) with a very nice amount of bass. I hesitated to post about them because they are pretty much the first decent pair of speakers I have owned. I had no basis to compare them to as I have never heard any of the other speakers recommended on these forums. They reproduce voices very clearly. I currently am using them in a 4.1 configuration since I can not afford the center channel, but I have no difficulty hearing and understand the voices when watching movies.
The cheapest place I have found the JBL Studio L series of speakers is on Ubid.com. Unfortunately, I have never ordered anything from them so I can not vouch for their service.
ubid.com/New_JBL_L890_4-Way%2c_Dual_8%22_Floorstanding_Loudspeakers_-_Pair/a901744780-rsearchone.html
(unfortunately, I have not made enough post to post links, but you can cut and paste the web address above)

They also have the center and rear speakers for sale.
