Hi,
I bought this receiver a few years ago. It's been seating in a corner for some time since the unit keeps shutting down when cranking up volume. It happens before -5dB. I tried swapping wires of speakers and turning on unit with one speaker at a time, but problem happens even without any speaker in, so it's an issue with the receiver itself, not the speakers or speaker wires. I vacuumed the inside and checked the only fuse I could find. I looked online for help but couldn't find anything else than what I already tried. I found the service manual online but I am not electronically savvy so I could use some help. I'm already at a loss with this unit so I'd rather fix it myself than have a pro look at it... Also, I noticed that the two biggest blue capacitors inside are bulgy on top, but not leaky. Not sure if the bulging is normal or if it's a sign that they're bad. Not sure how to test those; do I have to remove them in order to test them? Thanks for any input you may have!

That is a very old prologic receiver with DVD player.

I can tell you it is not the caps. Something is taking too much current. You are not going to fix it because you have no experience. You need a FET VOM, O-Scope, and signal generator at a minimum. You also need a Variac to work on it safely as you have to work on gear live.

I doubt you can get parts and the local service guy is long gone.

That unit is junk and needs a one way trip to the recycling center.

If you really must have one of those, then you can get them for $50 to $100 on eBay. You won't get into the door of any service center for that much.

By the way, I note from reviews at the time, they were a problem unit from the beginning. Remember fixed junk is still junk. Get rid of it.

Hi and thanks for your answer. Can you send me the link that says these units are junk? This project is good material for me to learn, since it is not expensive. I was wondering why you're so categoric about the issue not being the caps? Why are you so sure about it? I could post a picture but I'd have to disassemble it again. Let me know if this would help. Thanks, Michael

Because the caps are in the power supply, ahead of amplification and other processes. The shut down you describe would be post power supply.

It is going into protection because of excess power drain. 99 times out of a hundred that excess draw is a failed output stage in one of the power amps.

Search old reviews and you will see warranty issues.

Units combined with disc players have always been bad news from all quarters. The unit is basically an HTIB. All units of that type are to be absolutely avoided.
