Zumbo,

No HDMI audio on the Rotel receiver.
That just doesn't make sense. HDMI caries audio and video.
Yes it has optical or digital but neither of those will carry the new audio formats, correct?

Yes HDMI carries audio but my receiver will not accept it.

DTS-HD
I just read it. Like I said, I am not up on the new audio formats. It will either output through HDMI, or analog(If the player will do the decoding).

DTS-HD states it will work with HDMI 1.1 which his receiver has.(2 inputs/1 output)

Rotel description from the Rotel site:

Category: SURROUND SOUND RECEIVERS
Model: RSX-1057
Title: 75 x 5, 7.1 surround receiver

From a quick glance at its specifications, Rotel’s new RSX-1057 surround sound receiver might seem like just another entry in this very crowded component category. Yet, the RSX-1057 distinguishes itself from the competition during actual use with an overbuilt power supply that delivers the extreme voltage and current required during those explosive soundtracks so prevalent in today’s movies. The high current amplifier section puts a full 75 watts RMS per channel at your sonic disposal (that’s with all five channels driven simultaneously from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with no more than 0.05% THD!). In the real world, this is far more power than you’ll find in other products that provide only two-channel ratings. Of course, superb power supply design helps here as does careful parts evaluation and selection. But, that’s simply part of Rotel’s Balanced Design heritage. Are you concerned about future audio/video needs? The RSX-1057 is HDMI ready now with two HDMI inputs and one HDMI output (version 1.1) to connect your A/V components to the latest generation video displays with 1080P capability. Will you be moving your system to a larger environment, or considering an eventual move to full 7.1 surround capability? The RSX-1057 features an option that provides for the simple addition of a two-channel amplifier to expand your home theater options to full 7.1 should you desire it. Rotel hasn’t forgotten convenience either. The RSX-1057 provides analog and digital connections for up to seven additional components. The RSX-1057 even allows you to re-label inputs, assign inputs, perform advanced bass management and equalize channels. Advanced microprocessors from Crystal Semiconductor handle Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS ES Discrete and Matrix, DTS 24/96, DTS Neo:6 and Dolby Pro Logic II X decoding and provide several music modes for your enjoyment, too. Three component inputs and internal video transcoding let you see the best picture possible regardless of your source. The RSX-1057 is also for custom installations. There’s an RS-232 interface, multi-room, multi-source with composite video, three assignable 12-volt trigger outputs, discrete on/off remote control command codes, rear panel IR inputs, and a detachable AC power cord. A fully programmable remote control is standard.

While the A35 is definitely overkill from a video standpoint.
It's not. I has been proven that HD-DVD, or Blu-ray will be the best picture from a player for the 720p monitor in question.

Yes, but there may be less expensive ones for it as well, in hi def formats. Perhaps the A3? A2? Still gets 720p on the TV and hi def.

While the A35 is definitely overkill from a video standpoint, it is not for audio. Since his rotel does not have hdmi he has to go through the analog connections to get the better sound formats. If you don't care so much about TrueHD and whatnot he could always just go for the A3 and have standard DTS and DD. But then again if he was planning on buying a new hdmi receiver then it really wouldn't hurt to get the A35.
Then the hi def audio, truehd, will be passed via the analog outs, right? So, he will end up with it one way or the other.:D

Or, he could save the money, and just use the HDMI that will be connected anyway.

Well this thread helped explained some of the qusetions I had with respect to the audio portion of hi def players. The only problem now is the lower end Toshiba player don't have discrete analog outs and the A20 starts at over $300 Cdn.:(

Yeah that is one of the advantages of the A35. You don't need an hdmi receiver to have the best sound possible.

Thank you everyone for the help.

Zumbo, you are correct, my Rotel reciever does have HDMI, but I'm almost positive it will not accept audio over it. I may have the terms wrong, but I beleive it only does HDMI switching, not HDMI repeating, meaning that what ever signal you send to one of it's two inputs it will switch and pass through to it's output, but it can't do any procesing to it.

That is what has led me to the A35, while I don't need the 1080P as Mtry points out, the A35 is the only HD player I have found with the 5.1 audio outputs.
