One cable to your display and the new codecs.

HDMI benefits:
1) one cable solution for audio and video
2) best picture quality as some DVD players only upscale through HDMI
3) you can get HD audio

If there is going to be an electronic purchase, I wouldn't recommend purchasing anything without HDMI. And, I would also recommend a further investigation into what is available in the said piece of equipments competitors features. The list can be overwhelming, even for a technical individual.

At this point in time HDMI is a necessary evil. It's the only high def game in town. That doesn't appear to be changing real soon.
It has it's short comings but as Zumbo said I wouldn't recommend purchasing a receiver or DVD player without it.
There is no such thing as future proof but HDMI at least gets you a step or two away from obsolescence.

Exactly. Both my DVD players will only upscale through HDMI. Of course, you could go directly to the TV with the HDMI and bypass the receiver (of coursre, you would then have to hook up additional audio cables to the receiver to use your speakers).

In this case, the questions really are:
1) What sources will you be playing? If it's just a cable box and a DVD player, you could feed them directly to the TV and run audio cables to the receiver. If you have more sources constant switching of both units may become an issue, which leads us to:
2) Where do you want the sources switched? If you switch sources as above, you will always have to change the TV input source, then also change the receiver input source to match. If you run all sources audio and video through the receiver, then you only have to switch the receiver when you change sources. The TV can remain on the same input and act as a monitor with only a single wire connection. This is the easiest way to manage your home theater devices, which leads us to;
3) Will the home theater always remain a 2.1 system or is there any possibility of expansion to 5.1 or 7.1 in the future? If it will always be a 2.1 system, you might be better off running video to the TV as above and getting a solid integrated amplifier rather than a receiver. If it will always remain a 2.1 system, you can have no need for all the various codecs and can use the analog inputs from your source devices into a NAD or Rotel integrated amplifier for much less cost and likely better results than the system you are currently looking at for 2.1 channel.

I thought it was going to be that Denon AVP-thingamajig. I get so out of the loop because I can usually only visit the site from 7AM to 10AM on weekdays. It's hard to keep up with you guys.

I'm thinking about getting a 5308CI and NOT using ANY Anlogs at all, but sill keep my 3 PMA2000 Analog Amps and analog wires all hooked up just for the heck of it.:eek:

Yeah, I kind of go between the AVP-A1HDCI and the 5308CI. The thing is, I'll have about $1K in JR World gift cards. So if JR will have the AVP-A1HDCI, then I'll probably get it. If not, then it'll be the 5308CI.

I dont know which one of those fake wwf wresling people does that suck it thing, (im sure you guys know what im talking about)

But anyway, thats what I think about HDMI. call me crazy.

Dont get me wrong, its great for basic setups but i still like component video better. Perhaps its because I feel like I am more in control with component. :D
