Is Sony really that bad?

I wish that was the case more often. Why? Because I'm one who has to lug those 300 pound TV's around when they break, and they are breaking left and right. The number of Sony CRT's I have picked up for repair is unbelievable. The ratio of Sony repairs to other brands is probably 10:1.

Could be due to some heavy sampling bias. One variable that easily comes to mind is that the dude who purchased his sony 32" wega for $700 would probably be more likely to repair his television than the other dude who owns a 32" Daewoo for which he paid $200.

Just my .02 cents worth. Hi Ho do you think it is possible that the ratio of sony tvs being reparied is 10 to 1 because they have that much or a fairly large portion of the market share? Just a thought.
Actually, the shop sells considerably more Mitsubishi and Samsung TV's than Sony. Very few Mitsubishi's come in for service and I don't believe any Samsungs have since I've been there. Most of the Sony's are still under warranty (or extended warranty) and have problems such as bad solder joints, bad IC's, bad tuners, bad tubes, and blown caps, among others. Walking into the repair bay, one would see a room filled mostly with Sony products.

I'm not going to pretend that I don't have a (strong) bias against Sony but my experience with their products has not been good.

That would only be valid if every TV sold in the same quantities. Sony sells 100 times the amount of TVs then most other TV companies. 10:1 doesn't sound so bad now does it?

See my post above...

100 times more than other brands? I don't think so.

Dude, I worked at Best Buy. Everyone(that is stupid) came in wanting a Sony.

Maybe not 100 times more, but I'll bet that people who own the Sony TV's are more likely to actually call for a repair.

Sony TVs are usually at the top of the price tier for a given TV type, so the people plunking down the money for the best TV out there are usually going to be the ones plunking down to repair the thing when it goes bonkers.

Combine that with the fact that people know Sony TVs are excellent and they sell like hotcakes, and you have your "ten times more repairs than any other single brand of TV"

According to the manual, the DB840 has 5.1 pre-outs. So you have the option of adding an external amp for better sound quality. For $100 and in mint condition, it is definitely a great deal.
Mint condition for sure. I think the only thing wrong with it is there is a minor scratch on the front panel about an 1/8 inch long. It really was a steal.

I just got a Sony TC-K611S tape deck (from 1993) in the mail today from Ebay. Mint condition and mint heads (4 hours use max). Sounds nearly CD quality, and I paid $115 for it. It was probably about $400 or so new. The specs are 20 - 20k (+/- 3 dB), 85 dB S/N ratio (Dolby S, Type IV). Doesn't get much better than that.

I would say especially in the CRT era Sony would have been the highest sold, maybe not today where there is so much variety and quality out there.

Man, I will never forget the 100" CRT Mitsubishi the local home/car audio store installed, the thing had its own room for the cabinet!!

What an awesome machine.

That's understandable based on your experience. To me, their TV's are of high quality and seem to last forever. And I know a lot of my friends and relatives feel the same. They do tend to cost more, but I don't mind paying a little extra for the perceived higher quality. For receivers, the opposite is true, they tend to be cheaper compared to Denon and Yamaha except for the ES line.

i've had a DB940 for about 6 years now, bought it as my first experiment in 5.1, and it's been nothing but rock solid and reliable. movie performance has been great, music a little dry... but then again, my speakers aren't the most musical (not to mention i went from an ES cd player to a cd/dvd jukebox).

now i'm planning on going back to 2-channel, and i may just keep it as a pre-amp running to a 2-channel SS amp. i was originally going to ditch it for an integrated, but now i'm thinking i'll get more bang-for-buck keeping it.

When Sony came into the tv market their stategy was not to have the best quality but to have a high price so quality is assumed. But Sony in general is ok, middle of the road in quality. I have had good brands (nht) and bad (outlaw audio) so I guess it is the luck of the draw!!

If you plan on using that as a pre-amp, feel like trading? I have a 2-way remote that I can't 2-way with. :D

trade even-steven? why sure! hey, wait a second...

actually, my system rebuild won't begin for another 2 months, and it's starting with the speakers. so i probably won't be in the market to purchase the amp or integrated until december or january.

but hey, if you're still up for it then, maybe we can work out a deal. :)

That's a possibility. It wouldn't necessarily be a downgrade for you since all you're losing is the 2nd audio outs, but you would still have the pre-outs. It's just the remote I have is for a 2-way system, and the DB840 isn't 2-way compatible unfortunately.
