Is Definitive Technology Polk Audio Under a Different Name?

I came across this information the other day that one of the co-Founders of Polk Audio Sandy Gross is the Founder of Def Tech. Are these companies tied together in any way or are these companies seperate entities. I have not listened to either of these brands so I am also curious if these two brands of speakers sound very similar and if not what are there differences.

I can't say for sure, but IIRC Sandy Gross writes for Secrets of Hi Fi and is not associated with either brand.

Interesting. According to some brief research, Directed Electronics now owns both companies (at least, as of 2006). Sandy Gross is the correct name as the former co-founder of Polk that helped found DefTech.

When I auditioned the brands back in 1996, they sounded completely different to me. I don't know if the brands have become more similar since then.

I thought Bose owned Definitive Technology. They both sound the same.

Sandy Goss used to be with Polk, but he started his OWN company -- DefTech.

Now hundreds upon hundreds of professional audio reviewers and magazines, including Home Theater Magazine & Sound & Vision Magazine, praise the heck out of Def Tech speakers. Some of them even say that DefTech speakers sound like they cost 5 times their price! Those idiotic professional reviewers and magazines!:D

Definitive Technology and Polk audio are owned by the same parent company which is Directed Electronics based out of Southern California. They also own Orion, Precision Power, and A/D/S. My understanding is they invest heavily in the DefTech line. Maximum Home Theater in Tampa had rep on hand from Def Tech during a demo event who was speaking on the topic. My guess is Polk gets the benefit of Def Techs superb research facility and trickle down technology.

They do have a very different sound. Specifically, Def Techs are much better.

How can you make this statement? Both speaker companies produce a few different series of speaker.
Perhaps you would prefer: At each price point where both companies make speakers, Def Tech is always much better.;)

That is true, Joe, but I think you may be hurting his feelings a little.:D

Some people think Polk speakers are much better than Bose, you know?:D

I mean Paradigm and Klipsch belong to the same parent company, but some people might get their feelings hurt a little if we say that Paradigms are much better.:D

Hey Mazersteven I thought you said "I thought Bose owned Definitive Technology. They both sound the same. " so you probably don't really give a hoot about Def Tech or Polk Audio! Too each his own, but I am not sure Speakercraft in the ceiling speakers are the best sound either :confused

First, Polk speakers are much better than Bose (all speakers are much better than Bose, LOL.)

Second, Paradigm speakers are good for the price, while there are very few Klipsch speakers I can stand listening to for more than a few minutes (because of the brightness/harshness.)

Good for the price? You make it sound like Paradigm makes only cheap speakers. I own a Signature 5.1 setup 13,200 not including sub. I personally think they're outstanding, I picked them over Revel, B&W, PSB, Definitvie, and Dynaudio. As to the Def Tech vs. Polk: I owned Polk LSI 25s (polk's best) I thought the Def Tech 7000s spanked them all over town.

Midcow,

My statement was followed up with a J/K. Someone with the slightest bit of intelligence would have seen it was a bit of humor.

I really don't understand the intention, or meaning of your post. Would you like to clarify it for me?

With a difference of $2000 I would surely hope the Definitive Technology 7000's were much better. And if they are better it certainly isn't $2000 worth of better. The tweeter and design of the LSi series is truly special. :D

2 different companies owned by 1 parent company. Each has their own unique sound. I prefer the Polk sound over Def Tech sound regardless of respective price points.

Different strokes for different folks. Neither is better or worse than the other just different.

whoah you guys are crazy a red chicklet for pointing out a flamer?

I pointed this out because Mazersteven made such a flaming remark saying that " I thought Bose owned Definitve Technology" .

Why give me a red chicklet? I was not flaming I was merely pointing out what Mazer said.

Whiver gave me a red chicklet than you very much. But you gave it to the wrong person!

Something is wrong giving "red chicklets" with no accountabilty.
