i went to an ENT specialist last week to get my ears looked at and cleaned. a gp could do the same for less money but i didnt want to risk it.

i have become very much more cautious since developing tinitus a month ago after spending 6 hours in a club with music volumes of about 140db@1m.

reading up on tinitus i found out that cleaning an ear with a syringe and hot water, as i have always done, can often lead to tinitus. the ent specialist said i could still do this but to be very gentle. soften wax with hydrogen peroxide/glycerine solution beforehand.

whatever you do dont use qtips as they just push the wax further back and up against the eardrum. wax should normally work its way out of the ear unaided and ear cleaning is not usually need or recommended in most people.

I was having problems with my hearing. Things were extremely muffled. I thought i was loosing my hearing with age. Then I got a cold and my ears totally clogged. So i went to the dr's and he's like, they are completely occluded with wax so he used the peroxide/seringe method and HOLY ****! He pulls out this dime-size diameter ball of wax from each ear. They were like ear plugs! Everything was so much louder. Even someone talking to me at a normal volume made me wince because it sounded so loud. I could here things I hadn't heard in 2 years. Gross I know, but I had to share :)

140db for like more than 1 minute will cause permanent hearing loss. That's freaking loud.

A little off the subject, but very beneficial.

Funny you brought that up. We use peroxide in a dropper all the time for our family's ears (for a totally different reason - glad it gets the wax out, too). Did you know if you have a cold coming on, and you fill your ear canal with peroxide (while laying down) and the peroxide bubbles, you will rid yourself of the cold virus almost immediately? Peroxide won't bubble in an ear if you don't have a cold. You'll know when the cold is full blown if it feels like "7 Up" in your ear. I haven't had a full blown cold in years. I'm amazed more people don't know about it. There's a lot on google on peroxide's benefits. I believe very little of what I read, and even less of what I hear, so I won't feed you guys b.s. Try it next time someone has a cold coming on. You must do it as soon as you find out. A week into a cold it usually too late. Heck, you can mix 50% peroxide/water and gargle to rid a bad cough or sore throat. There's got to be a way to make money on this. Possibly dye the peroxide scarlet and call it "Buckeyefan-Tap."
