Another reason i loved zappa, anybody who thought they were gonna steal any of his licks & call it 'sampling' winds up in court quick.
A good friend of mine was Jim Pons' sister (Mothers of Invention and former Turtles bass player). I'll say this about Zappa...he was no fool. I expected him to be a good-timing, foolin'-around, pot smokin', artist-type. More than anything else, he turned out to be a quite astute businessman! Kinda ruined my image of him, lol.

Speaking of Zappa

There are two FZ lines I can't get out of my head:
"Well she was totally Chennille and her ol' man was a Marine"

"...destined to take the place of the Mudshark in your mythology...

I still have a Phi Zappa Krappa poster in my office. The grandkids think it's gross.:D

If it wasn't for the Lincoln Navigator the Escalade would be the ugliest vehicle on earth.

Might have to disagree here. My votes would be the Pontiac Aztek and/or the Toyota Prius. Eewwwwahh. The Navigator would be way on up the ugly list, however.

Have to agree about most rap music. I don't care for it.

best. thread. ever.
after I read the OP I wanted to throw in my rants on the topic, only to find that almost anything I would have writen was already put down by others. (even Sheep ;) )
but there is another thing that I detest about rap (and some other things too  ), and that is that people only 'like' it for the image its stars present; if 50 cent, or usher's... um "music" sounded exactly the same, but thay did'nt have the image thay do now, no one would like them.

I like "rap" ... but rap from the 80's and 90's. doesn't matter who the "artist" is ... I liked them then ... but sometimes I don't like em now. I liked snoop doggy dogg songs in the 90's, but none of his songs now I like ... now it could be I'm getting old. I've also installed subwoofers in my car, but it was never loud enough to bother people (I could barely get the bass a meter away from my car)

I agree with someone above who says it's the person at fault, not the type of music. the only reason these guys like rap is because it's the song type that has good bass beats ... if disco had good bass beats, you'd be hearing that.

but you know what I hate about these trick out car guys ... the noisy mufflers they install ... now that's an entire thread on its own ...

Um, rap sucks. I hate it,....I HATE IT SO MUCH. I don't particularly care for the face of rap, that gangstar stuff is all for...STUPID.

I also happen to agree about the Escalade not being the ugliest, the Aztek takes the Escalade by a mile.

I've heard AWFUL rape... er, rap, and I've heard some half decent stuff.

The Basis of rap(and all lyrical heavy music) is poetry put to music, but when people start making up words, or writing songs for a pair of shoes, thats when I draw the line and say "Hey loser, you're a loser".

I don't listen to rap. I don't own any rap that isn't used as a bass tester. I like my Metalcore, Hardcore, Screamo, Punk, Experimental, and some soft stuff, that's it.

Your entity has an interesting perspective. My entity tends to agree with yours. My entity used to have OutKast, because their enties used some real instruments and had some good lyrics and beats IMEHO. (E stands for Entity)

Surely you're joking. Most rap songs that I have been unfortunately exposed to have nearly the same identical beat. The bass may be low and loud but it is certainly not uptempo stuff and wouldn't be played at a typical techo dance club.

'Disco' is an overabused genre, like 'rock'. Lots of artists/songs have been classified as disco. If you want good bass beats (other than newer 'techno' music of which I have little clue), you need to look back to the early '80s. Stuff that used to be classified as 'electronica' but has now taken on the genre of 'old school' - Planet Patrol, Trinere, Afrika Bambaataa, Shannon, Newcleus, etc. That stuff is 128 beats per minute or faster and is the stuff I grew up skating to. I have the majority of it in my own collection now and I'll take that stuff over fitty cent anyday.

A friend of mine was a teacher, and had to explain to some of the young guys she taught (who used to go round the school terrorising other kids) that Ali G was a spoof, and that the point was that he wasn't laughing with them, he was laughing at them.
What's really sad is that he was lucky he didn't get fired over that little bit of instruction as one of the boys might have been "offended".

Here's what rap says to me: You are not cool unless you have superficial polygomous relationships with women stupid enough to think being called 'hos' and '*****es' is a compliment, you live in complete debt because you drive a pimped out Escalade wearing tacky gold & diamond jewelry and teeth while your "family" eats franks and beans. Additionally, the ultimate status symbols are having a police record and/or otherwise thwarting "the man". Life is about YOU, having a job is for losers, and kids are a mistake that cramp your lifestyle.

Did I miss anything? Rap sucks for more than just the lameness of the music - it's culturally depressing (and I don't mean emotionally).

I don't like most rap but I can name 2 exceptions and one is leaning more to the reggae genre.

For one the Roots have a lot of material that people of any age can relate to and some material that may turn some people away but most of there rap is actually poetry with beats. So for this instance I won't call it rap. Lately they have released a few more songs of which I don't care for the lyrics but still at least 3/4 of it is very good. It's also a whole lot more creative than most rap. They have the saxaphone in a few songs and some jazzier songs along with some other different style creations that rap isn't used to. I don't want to paint the wrong picture here, they do have a few songs where they talk about there violent home town of Philly but I'll take the good with the bad. If someone were to check them out you would not be able to judge them by any one album because there sound drasticly changes from one album to the next.

Another one is Damien Marley. I'm kind of new to the reggae genre but I can't get over the rhythm and I like the accent in the musical sence.

And I hate Escalades, Avalanches and PT cruisers.

That last line holds a lot of merrit. A lot of rappers probably know but would rather be part of the problem.

Aztecs are so ugly I'm constantly amazed that anyone would buy one. People that own them should be shot on site along with those driving wheeled distortion boxes while playing rap. The crime would be offending normal sensibilities.:D
